June 17, 2015 – Nigeria Ranked Second Most Deadly Country To Live In The World

Nigeria has described as the second most deadly country in world after Iraq and has also been ranked amongst the most violent nations globally following incessant attacks on the country by Islamist sect, Boko Haram, in 2013 and 2014.

According to Global Peace Index rankings for 2014, Nigeria is now the second most deadly country for terrorism after Iraq, experiencing 140% increase in deaths to 4,392.
Nigeria’s neighbour Cameroon recorded 191 deaths in 2014 compared to none the previous year. Fewer than 1% of terrorist fatalities in 2014 occurred in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Boko Haram’s massacre of over 2000 civilians in Baga, Nigeria in January 2015 was labelled the most deadly terrorist incident since 9/11, an event overshadowed by the murder of 11 journalists at French newspaper Charlie Hebdo the following month.
On the Global Peace Index, however, Nigeria got some reprieve as it was ranked only 14 places ahead of rock bottom Iraq in 162nd position. Egypt (149), Somalia (157), Sudan (158) and Democratic Republic of Congo (160).

The report to put the cost of violence around the world at a record $14.3 trillion in 2014, equivalent to the combined economies of Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom.
“Reducing conflict is a crucial plank in ensuring continued world economic recovery. If global violence were to decrease by 10 per cent uniformly, an additional US$1.43 trillion would effectively be added to the world economy. To put this in perspective, this is more than six times the total value of Greece’s bailout and loans from the IMF, ECB and other Eurozone countries combined,” Steve Killelea, founder and executive chairman of Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) said in a statement.

According to the report, since 2008 the total economic impact of violence has increased by US$1.9 trillion (+15.3%). The economic impact from refugees and IDPs alone has increased by 267 per cent since 2008, and now amounts to US$128 billion. However military expenditure, homicide and police forces remain the most costly categories, accounting collectively for 68.3 per cent of the total cost.

My country, my country, the most peaceful of all places in the world now under the terror of violence. What a siege, what a shift, what a burden.

We'll make it out again straight up to where we truly belong. Nigeria will rise

Bia Kekechi, Nigeria was never your country, let alone a peaceful one.
it was found with gun and sustained with gun.

We are Biafrans, the peace loving people.

Nigeria is teaching us violence and we must go home to Biafra.
Enough.

I think the north is dragging Nigeria backward in all ramification, they are dragging us back in poverty rate, standard of living, health and now security.

Not really cool sharing same country with those folks up there because left for the south this news won't be possible.

There was once a Nigeria where the Dele Giwa letter bombing was a tale that wow'ed kids. The explosion could only be imagined, and the resulting catastrophe rightly seen as completely inhuman.

Now, there are more bombing episodes by month than you can count on your fingers. It's almost as if Nigeria is at war, and today's kids have been rendered pretty inured to these repeated, senseless bombings.

While the activities of boko haram is worrying and gives a serious cause for concern, this stupid ranking is misleading and mischievously targeted at scaring away prospective foreign investors. How can nigeria, with only 3 states out of 36 under the siege of terrorist be considered more dangerous than Yemen, Somalia, Libya, Syria, Palestine, Afghanistan and many others still bogged down by civil and religious strives. These western powers pretend to be our friends while doing everything possible, including spreading false information, with the sole aim of wrecking us economically and make us into a nation that can survive only by their benevolence

Nigerians! Ever playing the victim...
No other place in the world have there been such recurrent, countless killings as has been in north eastern Nigeria. The massacre at Baga happened like any other: with Nigerians not caring one bit about the victims and their losses. Even satellite imagery, from thousands of feet above, could capture this insane ravaging, yet Nigerians will pretend like it never happened.

Playing the victim doesn't help. What reputation does the sunken country even have at all that is worth denigrating? No one cares, not this reporter, not the agency responsible for this ranking. Rather that raise voices claiming witch-hunting, we should be holding our heads down looking for ways to ensure the oppressed can again live without bother or harm.

The rate at which people are being killed in Nigeria is actually higher than what obtains in those countries you mentioned. The difference? Unlike in Syria and Lybia, most killings in Nigeria go unacknowledged.

Like I wrote earlier, the situation in the northeast is worrisome and a serious cause for concern, but it's not enough to paint a picture of national anarchy. According to FBI, in 2013 alone not less than 13,000 homicides were reported in the United states, that's an average of 120 people killed per day, is that enough to declare the United states a dangerous place to visit? Last year, the drug war in mexico claimed more than 20,000 lives, why was mexico not declared a dangerous destination? They still have a whole territory in Columbia under the control of separatist and drug lords, why was Columbia not labeled a dangerous place to visit. Go check how many people die of drug related violence in Brazil every year or how many terrorist related death was recorded in Pakistan last year and see if the tag on Nigeria Is fair.

You must realize that the consequence of this kind news cannot be palatable for a struggling economy like ours. With this kind of rating the cost of hiring expatriates to work in any part of the country shoots up astronomically and intending foreign investors are scared off

and that is why those bodies can just put any amount of figure they like and then rank countries like Nigeria.
