Former Governor Amaechi Signature Project In Rivers State? by Duke007(m): 5:45pm On Jun 25, 2015
For awhile now I have been engrossed with this thought of Governor Amaechi's signature project for his 8 years rule as a governor in Rivers state. Signature project are landmark project executed for the benefit of the people or the ruling class. For Mr. Akapio of Akwa-ibom, it was world class roads, stadia, hospital and hotel. For Governor Mimiko, it is the famous mother and child hospital, world class mega primary schools etc. For Fashola it was the road he built and many infrastructure too numerous to mention. For Jona Jang of Pleateau state, it was a 15 billion naira governor's office. Abeg na wetin be Amaechi's signature project in Rivers?

Majority of the signature projects done by our leaders are just trash except for the ones that by fashola. Akpabio's stadium adds almost nothing to the state of akwa ibom but withdraws from it due to cost of maintenance of a facility that won't be used more than twice a year. Of what benefit is an hotel to a state other than the creation of a few jobs? What about the cinemas he built?

The building of an airport by gov aregbesola is one of the reasons why the state can't pay salaries. Must every state own an airport? There is one in ibadan, lagos and ilorin which are all states surrounding osun, so what's the essence of osun having theirs? I guess it's just to say he did something extraordinary, a thing that will cripple the state further, a state that has majority of its working class people as civil servants.

Gov Obiano of anambra recently said he wants to build a billionaire city in the state. To what ends? I guess he also wants to do an elaborate project to fool the masses who are too unenlightened to know that they won't be able to afford to live in such city cos they are poor. Why not build low-cost housing estates with beautiful plans?

I think we need to move away from celebrating visionless crooks who blind us with glitters claiming it is gold. When you build too much of fly-overs and unnecessary projects with the masses going to bed hungry, the kind of decay lagos state experienced in the past will be child's play compared to what the recipient states will face. All they'll get as reward will be vandalism and lawlessness due to lack of adequate orientation giving to the people in the sense of jobs, schools, food, finance and meaningful provisions.

It hurts me when some irritants where trying to pitch akpabio against fashola by claiming akpabio performed than him for building a stadium. Their posture suggests that fasholas too should build a stadium when lagos has about 5 stadiums, 2 in surulere, 2 in lagos island (onikan and TBS which is convertable) and one in agege. Most of these facilities are decaying due to lack of maintenance, yet some people want him to build more.

What each states need to do is provide avenues that will provide easy meals for their citizens, instead of meaningless elaborate projects just to decieve the gullible to vote for them for another tenure.

Cool

Amaechi built much more solid roads than Akpabio as well as much more solid schools numbering over 500. These are not hidden as they are everywhere. Reduced unemployment in Rivers as well as the biggest real scholarship scheme for Rivers indigenes abroad. You cannot see a Rivers man anywhere working as househelp or gateman. He stopped youth restiveness and "marching ground" which accelerated the growth of Port Harcourt as a city for non-native investors.

A fantastic reply to the question.
rivers state is very similar to Lagos , oyo, Kano and kaduna in that they are more or less city states.
Grandiose projects like stadia, airports, hotels ,ekonatlantic are excusable for the aforementioned .
For the rest , no so much.
On amaechi , the greater port harcourt city is more relevant than anything thrown up in akwa Ibom.

I reside in Rivers and can't see anything worthwhile that Amaechi has done.
