Okonjo canvasses two-stream admission policy in institutions

By Segun Olugbile

The Obi of Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State, Prof. Chukwuma Okonjo, has advocated the adoption of a two stream admission policy for the nation's tertiary institutions.

Okonjo, who spoke during the 2009 Chief Gani Fawehinmi Annual Scholarship Award for students of tertiary institutions across the country on Thursday, in Lagos, said that this would reduce pressure on the nation's tertiary institutions particularly universities.

He said he single-handedly developed the concept in response to the difficulty being faced by many Nigerians who desired higher education.

Under the concept, Okonjo, who is also the father of the former Minister of Finance, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said that each academic session should be compressed to six months without injuring quality of delivery.

He explained that this would not cost government any money, adding that if it was adopted the population of students in tertiary institutions would double within three years.

Apart from widening the space in tertiary institutions, the academic-turned monarch, said that the students, would be encouraged to work in related fields of their disciplines in the last six months.

He said that as the students were made to work, most of the nation's socio-economic problems would be eliminated.

Okonjo added that unlike the present system where students were exposed to 500 hours of academic activities per session, the two stream admission policy would ensure that they were subjected to about 1, 536 hours.
