Suspected Boko Haram fighters on Friday returned to the ancient town of Kukawa in Borno State where they killed three soldiers and seven old men, witnesses and local officials said.
The terrorist had on Wednesday, July 1st attacked Kukawa shortly after the breaking of Ramadan fast killing 118 people.
They also destroyed many houses even though some of the residents that fled their homes returned after the deployment of troops.
The insurgents reportedly returned to the town on Friday when the residents were preparing to break their fast.
Alhaji Kole, an opinion leader from Kukawa told our correspondent that dozens of  Boko Haram terrorists stormed Kukawa around 5.30 pm, chanting Allahu Akbar (Allah is great).
“They kept their vehicles in the outskirt of the town and went straight to the army formation where they engaged troops in fierce fight.
“After long fighting, the terrorists killed 3 soldiers, forcing the remaining forces to retreat after exhausting their ammunition,” he said.
Another resident of Kukawa, Kolo Modu, said the insurgents proceeded to the town and set some houses ablaze.
“While they (terrorists) were engaging soldiers, most of our people fled their homes while some of us, the youths hid on trees. The terrorists then burnt some houses and after they left, we discovered the bodies of seven old men who died because of wounds from fire,” he said.
In a related development, soldiers on routine operations on Friday ‘mistakenly’ killed a driver of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and injured others.
The incident happened around Benisheikh, 70 kilometers away from Maiduguri, along Damaturu road.
Series of attacks had taken place on Friday, leading to the death of many people.
Witness Kamilu Tela said the tragic incident happened when the company’s engineers were coming back from repairs of some faulty installations.
“The soldier mistook the TCN workers as Boko Haram terrorists because they saw them coming out from the bush that leads to Damboa town, they opened fire on the Hilux vehicle and the driver died instantly,” he said.
An official of TCN, who confirmed the incident said apart from the driver that died, some occupants of the vehicle sustained gunshot wounds, including their leader who was shot in the womb.
