As a seafarer, What we pray most and always avoid onboard a ship is fire accident and Pirate attack.... Due to modern gadgets onboard ranging from Echo Sounder, Radar and electronic charts... and on bigger vessels plying international route do have ice-breaker jaw... I have watched the movie "Titanic" when I was a Lil younger.. maybe 14-15yrs... after I graduated from the Maritime Academy I now have a clearer picture of why the ship sank.... 1. The ship was constructed with a single hull.... But thanks to SOLAS regulations now... they have mandated all vessels to be constructed with a double hull This implies that if Titanic was constructed with a double hull, even when the iceberg pierced through the hull of the vessel... the ship would not have divided into two nor sink... 2. The AB on lookout didn't maintain a correct deck to bridge communication, I think by then a radio was invented, what could have prevented him from using a radio to communicate with the officer on duty at the bridge. 3. What caused more death was "Panic"... I have not worked on cruise liner before, but I guess the passengers onboard that ship should have been given a pre-information about the vessel like the muster point, life boat station and locker for lifejackets, from the movie everyone were panicking and looking so confused on where to escape... If proper safety orientation was given to the passengers before casting off.. I am very sure the number of casualties would have been minimal 4. The Lifeboat I saw onboard Titanic was below standard(manually paddled) well thank God for SOLAS regulations and modern technologies, in such a big vessel like a cruise liner... The best lifeboat to use is the "free fall method" Before the life boats were launched into the water it took time and people were even jumping into the water because they were scared to die I could go on and on.......but lemme stop here... everything happens for a reason so we can learn a lesson to perfect our flaws That's why there are regulations and standards set out for shipbuilders before laying out keel for ship construction.. We have ship classification societies which inspect the ship facilities during the laying of the keel and building of the superstructures That's why modern ships can sail safely even in rough weather conditions GLOSSARY Hull: Body of the ship SOLAS: Safety of Life at sea (Regulations set out to protect personnel working onboard a ship and the ship) AB: Able bodied seaman, Deck ratings Bridge: Another name for wheelhouse of a ship as cockpit is to airplane Radio: walkie Talkie Questions are welcomed 20 Likes 3 Shares |

And the captain of the Ship insisted on dying with his Ship, as against the crew members' efforts to get him on a lifeboat. Awww! What an honourable way of saying goodbye. Epic! 4 Likes 1 Share |

Just yesterday I was re-watching the movie. I'm sure a handful wouldn't know of the tragedy if it weren't for the film. |
