In contrast to the western world where policing is quite a civil business, police harassment is the order of the day in our dear country. A situation I believe prevails largely because of most citizens not knowing their rights, and certainly overzealousness and lack of skill on the part of the officers.

Even though there has been improvement in recent times, I still remember back in my school days when raiding was like a daily business for our men in black, hapless students being hounded off only for them to part with some cash to regain their freedom and all.

Long story short, I wanted to ask, are there required procedures or documents to be tendered by an officer of the law before placing someone under arrest? Also apart from the legendary right to remain silent, what other rights do we have in such a situation??

This would go a long way in educating the populace on our civic rights and responsibilities.

Knowledgeable nairalanders please do the needful. Admins kindly help improve the reach.

Yes there is search annd arrestt warrant. A police officer can arrest with or without warrant so also a civilian can make arrest with Or without warrant.
But before a police officer can arrest without warrant d ccommission of the offence must be in his presence. If not he is relieved of arresting without warrant and before one can be arrested with warrant the person so to be arrested must ask d police officer. For the arrest warrant to check for the name of d police station ,d officer dat issued d arrest warrant who must not be below the rank of inspector of police. Also a justice of peace can issue a Search or arrest warrant.

....well there is a warrant of arrest nd A warrant of arrest is usually issued: (a) Where a summons to appear before a court is disobeyed; (b) Where the law creating the offence states that an offender cannot be arrested without a warrant; and (c) When a person is alleged to have committed a felony, even though the law permits the arrest of the offender without a warrant of arrest..........nd you can be arrested without a warrant if........police officer can also arrest any person without a warrant if: (a) A person commits an offence in his presence, (b) He reasonably suspects a person of committing an indictable offence, (c) The police officer is obstructed while he is executing his duty, (d) A person escapes or attempts to escape from lawful custody, (e) He reasonably believes that any person is in possession of stolen property, (f) Any person who has no ostensible means of subsistence cannot give satisfactory account of himself......this is what most of the police will use as excuse wen u tend to challenge dem on warrant of arrest ......#copied#
