The Politics Of ''i' Am Not Igbo'' by Nobody: 10:03am On Jul 17, 2015 |
"When I was growing up, there was a saying that states: "A person who does not know, and does not know that he does not know, is a fool." During the World Igbo Congress Convention in London in 1998, who's who among Igbo, including Prof. Nwonodi (now late) came. During a plenary session, I asked Prof. Nwonodi why he came to an Igbo event as his people claim not to be Igbo. The question took him by surprise. "The reason for that question was that, in Dallas, Texas, as the then President of Igbo Community Association of Nigeria (ICAN), I invited Ogbako Ikwerre to come and join ICAN. Their secretary whose name I believe was Mr. Green wrote back, saying that if I invited them as Nigerians that they would come but not as Igbo. "Although the president of that organization called back to apologize, he stated that the secretary did not have directive to reply, especially in that manner. That the secretary has personal problem. Anyhow, it took Prof. Nwonodi a full minute to recollect himself to reply. "He told the audience that Ikwerre was Igbo. That they denied their Igboness for survival. He said that they had to renounce their Igboness when the Nigerian forces came into Rivers. He profusely apologized. "He said that they were going around the world to tell their kits and kins that they are actually Igbo. Prof. Nwonodi died months or a few years later" .................Nwachukwu Whether Ikwerre is Igbo or not was never in contention before the War. After the war, a lot of people started denying there Igboness for survival and political expediency. Prof. Nwonodi's response aptly captures the whole issue. We should all empathize with these people and not hold it against them. Jews went through the same experience. During the Era of persecution of Jews, (antisemitism) many people denied their Jewishness. At the emergence and success of the State of Israel, even those who are not Jews are claiming to be Jews. That is human nature. I remember, my good friend Innocent Oguh, an Ikwerre man. We were in Freetown, Sierra Leone together, where he studied Law at Furrah Bay College. There was never a time he insinuated that Ikwerre was not Igbo. He spoke Igbo more than me. It was he that introduced me to the Restaurant of Mr Chukwu, a Creole man who has never been to Nigeria before. We always went to Mr Chukwu's restaurant to eat fufu. Innocent once, jokingly told me that if I want to start a 3rd world war, I should tell Mr. Chukwu that he is not a Nigerian. I told Innocent that I may be dumb but I am not stupid because Mr. Chukwu looks like a cousin to Killiwi Nwachukwu. Same stature, same complexion. One of the easiest ways to sustain bodily injury is to go and tell that Mr. Chukwu from Freetown, sierra Leone, that he is not an Igbo man. He is so proud of it and wears it on his sleeve though he has never been to Nigeria before, his forebears are Igbo. The Igbo Nation should now realize that Igbo is a well established international Nation. Our people are scattered all over the world and are dealing with the local politics of wherever they are. If being openly Igbo will harm them, then they can deny there Igboness for the time being until a more hospitable time. We should all understand this, knowing that our industry steers envy and hatred against our people wherever they are. There are Igbos in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Brasil etc. The former Vice President of Sierra leone under Joseph Momoh was Ben Kanu. There is a place called Igbo lane, in Aberdeen, Freetown, Sierra Leone. Most of the residents there are Igbos who have never been to Nigeria. ----By cyril Anyanwu 1 Like |

presher:They are not regarded as Igbo because them the ikwerres said they are not. The Igbos in delta accepted their root and are treated as such. Ohaneze ndi has been led by someone from delta Igbo before. Truth is we don't even care if ikwerres want to be called Igbos because they are too lazy to be Igbo. 4 Likes |

I can see that the Ikwerris have become a major key to Biafra's secession success. Day and night, the Igbos keep mentioning them. Keep currying them to their side. Can't the Igbos be sensible for once? The Ikwerris said we are not Igbos. We are not related, we don't know u people. U people should go away. The Igbos should face their Bisfran business. We are not one and can never be one. Short and simple. No skin pain 1 Like |

jcmaiah: Thanks bro. Ikwerre are NOT Igbo. I don't understand their language and I'm a native Igbo speaker. We may share a few similar words but even Yoruba shares some similar words with Igbo because we all speak the Kwa cluster of languages. We have to draw the line somewhere. I draw that line at Ikwerre . Actually, they drew the line themselves. It's too late for rapprochement. 1 Like 2 Shares |
