Since it's creation in 2003 by then Presîdent Olusegun Obasanjo, it took the EFCC just three years to investigate 31 out of the 36 state governors in Nigeria under then Chairman Nuhu Ribadu. The EFCC then was the greatest living fear for politicians, financial institution workers and even people involved in internet scam. This led to the arrest and subsequent impeachment of DSP Alamieyeseigha (Bayelsa State) and Joshua Dariye (Plateau State). Also James Ibori (Delta), Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia) and Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu) not spared as they were arrested and interrogated by the EFCC. Though at that time it was alleged the EFCC was a tool used by the president to haunt political enemies.

By the time Obasanjo left office, Nuhu Ribadu was relieved of his duty and in came Mrs Farida Waziri. During her tenure, they EFCC was no longer as vibrant and active as it was under Ribadu but to her credit more than five bank CEO's of Oceanic, First Inland , Union, Afrik and Intercontinental banks were arrested and tried in court. By the time Farida Waziri left and Ibrahim Lamorde replaced her during the tenure of Goodluck Jonsthan, the EFCC was dead and buried.

It got so bad that it was even rumoured that the commission could not pay the salaries of it's staff and no public high profile arrest was made. It was as if corruption was Legalized and looting of financial and national treasury was the order of the day. Despite various financial crimes and fraud including Police Pension Scheme, Mr Lawan Farouk's bribery incidence with Femi Otedola, Oil Subsidy Claim Scam, Stella Oduah's bullet proof cars and Lamido Sanushi's (CBN) public outcry of missing $20 billion in NNPC. In all these no single arrest was made and EFCC and Lamorde were no where to be found.

Fast forward to June 2015 and the same commission in six weeks under the same Lamorde seem resuscitated rounded and charged to court Ex Governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Ikedi Ohakim (IMO), Chimaroke Nnamani again (Enugu) and Murtala Nyarko (Adamawa). This is something they didn't do in 6 years but not doing in six weeks. Call it "Witch Haunting" or "Selective Justice" I don't care. All I care is that justice is gradually returning to Nigeria. It has to start from somewhere and most poor Nigerians would agree that it was better during the era of Ribadu than what was withnesssed in the last six years. Nigeria can never be fixed in a year or day but we have to lay solid foundation for that to happen . Which ever way it is clear this is surely the right step.
