Since the advent of the fourth republic, Nigeria has sustained the longest stretch of democratic rule. During this period Men has dominated the scene with the female folks tagging along with little emphasis on there clamor for 35% affirmation.
Anambra state has been leading the pack of women in politics; they have shown out amazons who have contributed immensely to the strengthening of our democracy and nation building.
Hon Lynda Chuba-Ikpeazu became the first elected female politician. She represented onitsha south federal constituency from 1999-2003.
After the 2003 general elections, Hon. Mrs. Eucharia Azodo (PDP Aguata 1) emerged the first female speaker of the state house of assembly. As the speaker, she was consumed by the political crisis between Governor Chris Ngige and his then Godfather Chief Chris Uba. She was impeached and replace by Hon. Mike Balonwu. The Supreme Court was later to sack Chris Ngige and Peter obi was sworn in March 2006 as the executive governor of anambra state with Dame Virgy Etiaba as the deputy. Hon. Eucharia Azodo was later elected in 2011 to represent Aguata Federal Constituency in the National Assembly and was re-elected in April 2015 for another four year term in the House of Representatives.
Dame Virgy Etiaba became the first female Governor in Nigeria. She was sworn in as the executive governor of Anambra state on November 2006 when Peter Obi was impeached by the Mike Balonwu led House of Assembly. The court of appeal reinstated Peter obi as the Governor on February 2007 and Etiaba served out the tenure as the Deputy Governor.
Come in Senator Joy Emordi who won the People's Democratic Party (PDP) primaries for the 12 April 2003 election for the Anambra North Senatorial zone, and was declared the winner on 16 April 2003. A few days later, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reversed this decision, and declared Emmanuel Anosike as the winner. INEC had earlier returned Anosike as the winner of Anambra East/West Constituency of the House of Representatives. After appeals, on 21 January 2004 the Election Petition Tribunal declared that Emodi had been duly elected, and after further appeals she took her seat in February 2005. She got re-elected in the 2007 general elections but was sacked in 2010 following an appeal by alphonsus igbeke. Emordi was later appointed Special Adviser to former president Goodluck Jonathan on National Assembly Matters.
The 2007 election saw the entrance of Iyom Uche Ekwunife. She was elected into the Federal House of Representatives to represent Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia Federal Constituency of Anambra State was re-elected in 2011. Her sterling qualities as a great leader of the people made her people to elect her the Senator representing Anambra Central in the 8th Senate of the National Assembly. She ran for the Governorship seat of Anambra State in 2010 and 2013, and at both times, she came very close to clinching victory.
In 2011, Hon. Mrs. Uche Nwebili representing Ogbaru North on the platform of All Progressive Grand Alliance was elected speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, thus becoming the second female speaker of the house.
Mrs. Margery Chibuogu Chuba-Okadigbo was on July 7th, 2012 sworn in as the Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District in the Senate of the Seventh National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Her election to occupy the seat which her late husband, Dr. Chuba Okadigbo was accomplished after a protracted legal battle which saw her oust John Okechukwuemeka
With a successful end of the tenure of Hon. Mrs. Nwaebili as Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly on June 9 2015, many people thought that it was time to try a male member as speaker of the House. But that was not to be. Instead, another woman, Hon. Mrs. Rita Maduagwu (APGA, Nnewi II) has succeeded Nwaebili. Maduagwu’s nomination, like that of her predecessor, was unopposed and thus she became the third female Speaker to preside over that House between 2003 to date.
The women have also made their marks in appointive positions.
Mrs. Dora akunyili was the Director General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) of Nigeria and Nigerian Minister of Information and Communications from 2008 to 2010. She was a pharmacist and governmental administrator who gained international recognition and won several awards for her work in pharmacology, public health and human rights. Akunyili ran for election as Senator for Anambra Central for the APGA in April 2011 but was defeated by Chris Ngige of the ACN. She immediately sent a petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission disputing the result. She died in an India hospital on 7 June 2014 after a battle with Cancer.
Iyom Josephine Anenih was a Special Adviser on Women Affairs to President Obasanjo until 2006. She was appointed Nigerian minister of Women Affairs on 6 April 2010, when Acting President Goodluck Jonathan announced his new cabinet. She initiated a programme and project which they called “women for change initiative” with the mission to engage civil society organizations and government stakeholders to develop a strategic plan of action for tackling gender-based violence and sexual coercion among youth. She was the chairperson of the Federation of Women Lawyers from 1994 to 2000, and was the first National Woman Leader of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) from 1999-2005
Princess Stella Oduah-Ogiemwonyi was the Nigerian Minister of Aviation. She was confirmed to the post and sworn in on July 2, 2011 and was deployed to the Ministry of Aviation on July 4, 2011. Princess Stella Oduah-Ogiemwonyi was born to Igwe D.O. Oduah of Akili-Ozizor, L.G.A. in Anambra State on January 5, 1962. Oduah-Ogiemwonyi received her Bachelors and Masters Degree (in Accounting and Business Administration respectively) in the United States. Upon her return to Nigeria in 1983, she joined the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. In 1992, she left the NNPC to establish the Sea Petroleum & Gas Company Limited (SPG), an independent marketer of petroleum products in Nigeria. She was elected as a Senator to represent Anambra Central in the eight National Assembly
The ability of these women to occupy key positions in both the national and state executives and legislatures and the success derived have shown that women in politics have come to stay in Anambra state. Nigerian states should emulate this model so that our democracy will have an equitable balance and more dividends.

The Role of Radio in Mobilizing Nigerian Women into Politics

Radio as a mobilizing tool was discussed extensively. Starting from a brief history of radio,
the role radio plays as a mass medium to the mobilization function of radio and how radio mobilizes women into participating in politics.
Coming to women in politics, the researchers explored the impact women have made in Nigerian politics since the inception of Nigerian women politicians and why the have not been showing heads above the water to compete with their male counterpart.
