As much as Sadiq was enjoying Janelle's company he still missed Zeenat and Vanessa. But he certainly missed Zeenat more and seeing her everyday without being able to talk to her was suicidal.

No matter how hard he tried to concentrate on the handout in front of him and read for upcoming midterm test he couldn't. He found himself sketching her face or printing her name on his note book.

When he picked up his book to read, he would spend 80 percent drawing her, while the remaining 20 percent he managed to read a page or two.

Late in the evening as he stepped out of the house to get some breeze, he sighted a familiar figure passing by.

She made a quick glance at him as she approached and looked away immediately.

Sadiq knew she won't respond if he called her, but he thought he ought to try, at least. He was about calling her when he heard his name from above.

"Sadiq" it was Janelle. She waved at him. He waved back hurriedly,

Zeenat who was still in close range looked up at Janelle and hurried away. Her change in footstep further made Sadiq to desist from talking to her.

A little stone dropped on his head while he was watching Zeenat leave. Janelle laughed at his reaction and said;

"I've been talking and your mind seemed to have been lost somewhere. I had to bring it back"

"Oh I'm so sorry. What were you saying?"

"I was asking you what you think about my hair" she said wiggling it. Her hair were blonde but she had dyed it black.

The dark hair brought out her white skin more and didn't seem to look good on her. Although she had this small gorgeous face that always looked
good even when she was angry or making funny faces.

"Where is Janelle?" he joked.

"Come on! It didn't change my look that much, did it?" she asked.

"Hummm...just a little" he signified, pinching his finger together. "The old Janelle looks better" he added.

"Well i was just experimenting. You'll just have to get used to this Janelle till the dye fade off." she said, resting her arm on the balcony barrier.

"Tell me about her" Kazim insisted that night after dinner.

"There's nothing to tell. She's just a girl" Sadiq tiredly.

"You know i know nothing about her even though we've been neighbors for almost a year plus now"said Kazim.

"Okay fine." Sadiq reluctantly. "Her name is Janelle as you already know. She's from Ireland and her father is an archaeologist. Seems its her dad's occupation that brought them here. She's a nice girl."

"Really! She snobs people and you say she's nice" Kazim

"She isn't a snob. Actually she said something like you people here don't talk to her....she kind of felt she isn't welcomed." Sadiq.

"But she never said hi to anyone" said Kazim, and added. " except to you"

Weeks later after mid term test Sadiq got a call from Vanessa's agent informing him that his book got the attention of a reputable firm overseas and they want to adapt it into a movie.

She cut to the chase and informed him of the millions he will get as royalties.

"You have to come down to Lagos this week to finalise things. That's if you are okay with it being adapted to a movie"

"I'll think about it."

"No time to think! You have to be in Lagos latest this week if you want this to happen" she said emphatically. She knew the gains she'll make if he says yes.

"I'll call you soon" he hung up.

It was a very tempting offer with millions! What was there to think about?! Oh..........Vanessa!

If she didn't like the book out, she definitely would hate it to be on screen. This will surely increase her hatred for him. The agent didn't really care, as long as she makes money out of it.

So now, it's either he choose the millions and lose Vanessa. Or lose the millions and still get a fighting chance of getting Vanessa back.

He didn't share the news with anyone.... atleast not for now. After composing a message he sent it to Vanessa via BBM. He informed her about the offer and how he was going to decline, because of her. The message showed delivered just like all other messages he had sent to her since months ago that showed delivered but she hadn't replied.

He was just existing the bbm app when he got a new notification. It was from Vanessa.

After she had apologized she told him not to decline. She explained that the book wasn't all a bad omen, because of it she also got several international
companies offering her really amazing contracts.

That was part of the reason she was in Paris.

"So please accept it. I'll be back next month. Hope to see you with a smile." she texted.

That was relieving for him. At least one down, one more to go. But thinking about it, the contract that the book got her was why she was reconciling with him and not because she had actually
decided on her own to reconcile.

He called Vanessa's agent and gave her a 'yes'. She was in ectasy.

"We are going to be rich...." her tongue slipped. "I mean you're going to be rich!"

Sadiq didn't even respond back. He called his parents and briefed them, then informed Alhaji Najib and others. They w

"I read your story twice!" said Humaira as she helped him pack.

"Where did you get it?"

"At a book shop. I don't know why you hid it from us" she pressed a Jean trouser into his bag.

"I don't like it. The story was a mistake in the first place" he said.

"Some mistakes sometimes are the best. More over nothing is ever a mistake, everything has its purpose" she preached.

"You should write an inspirational book" said Sadiq to her with a serious yet mocking look.

"You know, sometimes i can't tell if you're being sarcastic or serious" she said.

"Forgive me... I can't help myself when I'm around you" he smiled.

"You see what I'm saying....you're doing it again!" she shot back with a light punch.

"Okay I'm going to..." he used his hand to zip his lips with imaginary zip.

"Funny. Even your actions alone have voices embedded with sarcasm." she said then laughed. "You use to be very reserved when you came..but now you've changed" she observed.

"Oh no I've not. I'm still very very reserved. But when i get very comfortable around someone, just like I've been with you, i always let my guard down and become free. Some people will never see this side of me." he narrated.

"That explains a lot" she agreed.

He was welcomed home warmly. His parents were proud of him and little Asma'u was excited, jumping up and down. She looked cute. He had no intention to stay long due to his upcoming exams.

Vanessa's agent met with him and they got all the necessary things sorted out. There was going to be a red carpet event the next day, he was expected there.

"You didn't even bother to inform me that you're in town" Jennifer to him that evening.

"I'm sorry it was an unplanned trip. But how did you know i was around"

"Words travel fast these days" she replied. They were standing by the roadside.

"That's strange. Anyway I'll be going back immediately"

"After attending the event tomorrow?"

"How did you know about that too?" Sadiq more surprised. It was like she had him under a microscope.

She laughed proudly. "I told you words travel fast. So here is the thing, you'll have to make me your escort to that event"

"What!?"

"I want to be your date and escort to the event" she rephrased.

"I can't do that. I already told you, me and you can't happen. And Vanessa and i recently made up, i really don't want to upset her again" he said in the most careful way in order not to hurt her.

But girls like her don't get hurt. They have this kind of heart that has a thickness one can't imagine.

"See...let's get something straight" she said with all seriousness. "I don't love you, you are not even my type. I'm just hanging around you because i need you to make me popular"

"What!?......."

"Yes you heard me. Initially i thought Vanessa could help but she's too messed up. But you, you have gotten yourself a reasonable attention from the media. Just imagine if I'm seen with you and news flood the media that you've dumped Vanessa for me. Everyone would want to know me and i might just get the recognition i so much yearn for" all Sadiq could do was listen with amazement wrapped with shock.

Who on earth is this girl! It was as though the character in the novel he wrote who was manipulating her friends for fame, it's seems the character has possessed Jennifer.

"You're crazy. I'll never do such. If you weren't a girl i would have hit you already!" he managed to say as he controlled his anger.

"I don't mind if you call me crazy, your best friend Vanessa taught me. And you really don't have a choice because i have leverage against you." She smiled mischievously.

"What leverage do you have against me?!" Sadiq, regretting why he ever knew this girl.

"Remember at the beach when you told me your biggest secret about Zeenat. Well i had our conversation recorded, that's the beauty of phones. If you don't agree I'll send it to her" she
threatened.

"You recorded our conversation!" he said, his anger rising. "You're bluffing, even if you recorded it, you don't have her number"

"Wrong again! How dumb can you be? How else did you think Zeenat came to
know about the show? I'm the one who sent her the link to the video" she felt proud of her mischief.

Sadiq held his fist.

"Hitting me will only make things worst for you" she quickly said, moved back precipitately on noticing how his fist was pumping up.

"You're evil" his voice echoed.

"I told you i don't care if you call me names. Just for the record, I'm also the one that made Vanessa get mad at you for depicting her the way you did in that your stupid novel!" she rubbed it in.

It was as if she was enjoying it. She wanted him to get angry.

Keeping his calm, Sadiq managed to say "If i allow you escort me to the event, you'll have to promise me that you'll delete the video you recorded and you'll stay away from me" he started his bargain. He just wanted to be free from her....to let her out of his life.

"I promise to delete the video, but stay away! that i can't promise to do. We are stuck together, forever!" she placed more emphasis on the 'forever'.

"Fine, deal. But just know from now on you've become my greatest enemy" he walked away before she could say anything.

"Whatever!" he heard her say but he didn't look back.

The brutally pretty girl. Not every pretty girl is worth going for, because they say even the devil looks good in a red dress.

Sadiq should really have believed her when she told him that she was the non human because honestly she has proven to be inhumane.

Everything is linked, from the strange girl standing under the tree to the dog barking endlessly at nothing and the drop of water dripping down from the knob-less tap in the dead of the night. Each one is a dot, a dot that connects so many unanswered questions. Each one connects the life of one to another, each dot pairs the life of a total stranger to another stranger.

As promised Jennifer was Sadiq’s escort. Predictably there were lots of questions…Who’s the new girl? Where is Vanessa? Is it over between them. Sadiq couldn't wait for the event to end; it was heart wrenching just being around Jennifer.

“Now that it’s over, can you please delete the video” Sadiq.

“Fine” she pulled out her phone and deleted it while he watched.

“No other copy of it?” he asked.

“No.” she replied.

“Great. Now it’s over between us”

“Maybe. But something will bring us together again”

"I greatly doubt that" replied Sadiq.

"We shall see"

There were several missed calls on his phone when he got home that evening. They were all from Vanessa.

As he dragged himself into his room tiredly while trying to dial Vanessa's number, from his window blind he saw a light in her room and noticed some movement in there.

He checked the number she had used to call him and it was her Nigeria number. Dropping the phone on his bed, he climbed out of his window, struggled through the tree and held her next door neighbor's window firmly.

If her plan was to surprise him, he definitely would be the one doing the surprising. He popped his head through the window, before he could shout 'boo! I got you!' a pillow landed on his face sideways. The 'pillow hitter' didn't stop till Sadiq said 'its me Sadiq! Your neighbour!'.

"No vex I think say na thief wan enter" the housemaid pleaded still a bit shaken.

"Is Vanessa back?" he dropped into the room.

"What an entry you made" a voice came from the exit door. It was Vanessa.

Is it?

The girl standing by the door had a low hair cut. The area around her eyes seemed to have been colored with a lot of dark mascara. She had this hippie-yet-classy-model look.

"And what a makeup you have there, and your hair!?" he slowly said, observing her from the floor where he sat after he had dropped into the room.

"I'll take that as a compliment" she replied. "So you and Jennifer huh? I didn't see that coming"

"It's not what you think"

"Really"

"Yes V. There's a lot i need to tell you"

"Please spare me the excruciating details of how you two fell for each other" Vanessa waving her hands.

Sadiq narrated the whole incident to her, everything.

"Well i know Jennifer is capable of evil, but this is so evil it doesn't sound like the Jennifer i know" was Vanessa's reply.

"I know you won't believe me, good thing i have a proof." He advanced towards her window. "Give me a minute let me go get it"

"Okay mister, use the door" she held his shirt before he could climb out the window.

"Seriously?!"

"Yes. You need to start using doors like normal people, don't want you invading my privacy"

"But the window is a lot faster!" he complained like a kid.

"I know" she laughed.

As he opened the exit door, "i didn't miss you a single bit" he said.

She held the door knob. "I didn't miss you at all even for a second" she winked. He smiled and rushed off.

A little far away, in a district not too familiar, a lady held her phone preciously while smiling mischievously.

She connected her phone to her laptop and transferred a certain video to her phone.

"He really did think that was the only copy, how dumb!"she muttered to herself and pushed the send button. "This will be the icing on the cake".

And now that she has sent the big secret to Z, all hell might have been let loose.

Sadiq sprinted back to Vanessa's house.

"I'm back"

"So where is it?" She looked hastily.

"Here, okay, you'll have to use an head piece because of the background noises from the road"

You don't need to guess anymore. He had recorded his conversation with Jennifer the day she proudly confessed her mischief.

Smart move! Someone is learning fast.

"Why are you calm?" He asked after she had listened to the audio recording. He had expected her to be very pissed.

"I'm not calm" she replied. "I'm just thinking. You remember the character in your novel, the one that manipulates her friends and.."

"Yes. I thought of that too" he paused, stared at her curiously "Wait! Don't tell me you're thinking exactly what i think you're thinking!"

"Well is it possible? Is it possible for it to posses her?"

Yes...yes it sound very absurd! The character in the book didn't posses her, it is you who possessed her!

"No! You too know that's very absurd. It's impossible. What if she isn't possessed, what if i had truly written out her true character and she finally started showing it?" He sounded more like he was trying to convince himself.

"As a matter of fact that actually makes sense" she let the audio play again without the headpiece. "And if that's the case then she really has gotten on my last nerve!"

"What are you going to do to her?" he sensed she was definitely thinking of something.

"We'll bring her down, slowly and emotionally!" She clenched her fingers.

"She has no emotion"

"Trust me she has...even more than you could possibly imagine"

I'll like to believe this; those who prove strong on the outside, those who look tough and look so emotionless, they are truly the ones with the most emotions. Deep in their heart is a strong pull to let go, to be free to show someone what they feel within but they can't, they won't cos they are scared of something repeating itself, something which is distinctive to each person, something with the power of crippling their heart, again.

Whatever plan Vanessa had in place for Jennifer it better works because the news she and Sadiq are going to hear the next morning would be demoralizing.

Jennifer's plan doesn't end, a single plan has branches. Just when you think its over, you see another branch growing from somewhere you least expected.

It was suppose to be a beautiful morning, with birds whistling, the sun rising from its end, colorful butterflies flying past their window and swiftly landing on several flowers in the garden, and the thought that Jennifer was going down this time. It was suppose to be a great morning, but Jennifer's gift was delivered to them even before they had breakfast.

The two neighbors woke up to answer their ringing phone. The message from their caller was similar.

Vanessa was called from Paris, she was informed that they had withdrew the contract they offered her.

It was same for Sadiq. They withdrew the deal to adapt the 'who is she' novel to a movie. Actually the caller said they were still interested in making a movie out if it but his break up with V was going to slow things down.

No wonder Jennifer asked him to take her as his escort; she used the process to spread words to the media that she was now with Sadiq. Whatever her motives are, it's surely playing out the way she wanted.

This is a breakfast served hot and spicy, bonne appetite!

The two neighbors opened their windows at the same time and both had that look, that devastated look, that look that suggested that they were losing.
