The Nigerian Navy has acquired two new warships and helicopters to intensify patrol of the nation's coastal waters and the volatile Niger Delta region.

The new craft is the Manta 38-metre Offshore Patrol Craft.

The Navy also took delivery of two new Augusta Helicopters from Italy .

The Director of Naval Information, Commodore David Nabaida, told defencereportsng.com that "the Nigerian Navy had taken delivery of two 38-metre Manta class Offshore Patrol Craft. And they would help to beef up the Navy's capacity to protect offshore facilities, including the Escravos, the Agbani, and the Bonga.

"These, in addition to the other platforms we have would enable us maintain more presence at sea.

"The two vessels will have the capacity to patrol and intercept any threat and to deal with the threat."

It was learnt that with speed in excess of 30 nautical miles per hour, the Offshore Patrol Boats should be able to patrol much of the nation's 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone.

Already, the crew of the vessels have been designated and will soon commence training on board.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Isaiah Ibrahim, has ordered the movement of the Naval Logistic Command in Delta State to its permanent location in the state.

Isaiah said the movement must be completed by March 31.

The Flag Officer Commanding, Naval Logistic Command, Rear Admiral Owoicho Oketa, disclosed during a courtesy call on the Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, in Warri on Wednesday.

The naval formation has been operating at a temporary location in Sapele since it was created in 2004.

The patrol boat is not that powerful to be honest when compared to other Naval ship in the world. In a way, it shows the criminal gangs Nigerian government means business.

Haba . . . Na just 2 patrol boats. It's not like we are talking of a battleship or frigate.

They're probably second hand boats that will break down in a year or two.

It would be nice if we tried to produce our own.

Maintaining foreign, and often second hand equipment is really expensive.

Please how much did the Yar'adua spend on these vessels, It would be interesting to know.
Could this money have been added to solve the NigerDelta Crisis?
Well! from what I know, The major operations of the militants are in the creeks where this boats are useless.
I honestly think there is a real need for Yar'adua to refocus on solving the nigerian problem through other means.
Re: Nigerian Navy Acquires New Warships To Face Niger Delta by Mgrarinze(m): 3:28pm On Mar 08, 2016
Why does our government do this always, create a problem and then go round to spend tax payers money and resources to solve them.
When will we ever learn?
It is well.

The the Militants should also go and train on how to destroy the new technology. When you are faced with a new technological challenge, you train yourself on how master that challenge by upgrading your knowlege and . Struggle against the fulani feudals must continue! The East will not be made a slave to any fulani bagger!
