Nigeria’s Arunma Oteh named World Bank's vice president & treasurer By: Thabile Manala Last Updated: 24 July 2015|19:11 GMT Nigeria’s Arunma Oteh has been named the new vice president and treasurer for the World Bank. Photo: Forbes Africa Nigeria’s Arunma Oteh has been named the new vice president (VP) and treasurer for the World Bank. According to a statement from the World Bank, Oteh was selected to this position through an international competitive search process and will assume the role on the 28th September. Oteh who was the director general for Nigeria’s Stock Exchange will now be the first African woman to head up the treasurer position. Oteh however is not the first African woman to be appointed to powerful positions at the World Bank. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is one of its managing directors and Obiageli Ezekwesili, Africa Region vice president. The international financial institution says as VP and treasurer, Oteh will manage and lead a large and diverse team responsible for managing more than $150 billion in assets. "Her top priorities will be to: (i) maintain the World Bank’s global reputation as a prudent and innovative borrower, investor and risk manager; (ii) manage an extensive client advisory, transaction and asset management business for the Bank; (iii) engage, in her capacity as one of the World Bank’s key representatives, with outside stakeholders including global private sector financial institutions, the financial media and the sovereign debt and reserve managers in client countries, as well as ratings agencies; and (iv) collaborate extensively with the Finance Partners throughout the WBG, including with IFC and MIGA, expanding shared approaches, in particular around innovative financing for development and for key new projects," the World Bank says. Oteh's career has been pioneered by many firsts, including being the first Nigerian woman to be accepted into the Harvard Business School MBA project. She has served on the board of a number of organisations including National Pension Commission (PENCOM) and Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria. Her career soared to enviable heights when she became the vice president of the African Development Bank and restored its ratings to ‘AAA’ by Standard and Poor. She has been defined as the “Iron Lady” in respect of her tough decision-making. Oteh responds to that saying, “If leading change, being passionate, resilient and decisive about a great course is what makes me an iron lady, then I proudly raise my hand high to that tag.” Oteh had this to say about her new job http://www.cnbcafrica.com/news/western-africa/2015/07/24/arunmaoteh-vp-worldbank/ 1 Like

I laugh for these Ibos and their obsession with titles. They told us here in Nairaland not.long ago that the British Parliament has three Ibos but no Yoruba. London metro Police has adopted Yoruba as a second language for intending.recruits. If three Yoruba had held the World Bank post by now Yoruba esusu would have been adopted as an economic culture universally. Even in the Baltics Yoruba language has been adopted as a school curriculum. Ibos can keep titles.....Yoruba is satisfied with spreading our culture around the globe. Fair! |

OPCNAIRALAND:Yes we know that, and we also know the reason is to help the brits combat crimes as most of the african prison inmates/convicts are yelobars. Its no longer news that yorobars dominate the number of Africans convicted of crimes in the UK as they are renowned fraudsters in the uk from internet fraud, credit card scams, bank 419, online robbery, burglars etc, but as expected self conceited and deluded loud mouths like you will come and celebrate this as an achievement 4 Likes |

ChrisOD: mumu, I say the government of a foreing land recognized adopted Yoruba as a cultural unit of its society. In your response you bring me a mix child speaking Ibo at a private event. Of course one of his parents is Ibo I would expect that. In fact if he was in the Baltic region he will soon be taught Yoruba by his school. Second, in response to London Municipality adopting Yoruba you bring a employment ad from a private company looking for interpreters in Ibo. You lack perspective! You say Things Fall Apart was read world wide. The primitiveness of Ibo had been reported by explorers and missionaries and no one could believe that such a backward and barbaric culture existed. When Things fall apart came out it became the testimony from the horse's mouth....and of course Europeans were quick to distribute it around and made it available for wide audience. Those who belittled the explorers and missionaries that visited Iboe country and charged them with bias and racism were given the book to reflect.......to see for themselves why Ibos were called animals. Poor you, you think the book was circulated for its mastery of the arts and literature. If that were the case the book should have won the author a noble prize. Why do you lack perspective? Ode! Go to America, Carribean Islands and Latin America....and now Europe, Ifa is a common practice. They throng to Osogbo for the yearly pilgrimage to worship Osun. Shut up if you have no ground to compete on culture. 1 Like |

OPCNAIRALAND:Yoruba folk fail to understand the logic in Metropolitan Police wanting Yoruba speakers in their system. There are a lot of criminals of Yoruba extraction in London, they are challenging to prosecute; thus, the police need people that can assist in bringing these Yoruba criminals to justice. 3 Likes |
