fulanimafia: What is the rate of girl child OUT of school in the 19 northern states today, more than 50 years after Is that progress or regression? The first step to recovery is acknowledging there is a problem. Self-deceit is the worst injury one can inflict on oneself! Believe me, this OP's thread can only but further strengthen the notion of illiteracy prevalent up North. Sorry I said Illiteracy again. Forget Boko Haram, most Northerners do not appreciate the formal education as we know it, but view it as tradition to send their male children as almajiri and the rest to Islamiya to learn Arabic and the Quran. It's tradition. How then are those people expected to compete in today's world? I had a secondary school classmate then who was a genius and then some other very brilliant guys. Some Kanuri, some Shuwa. We are all adults now and I still maintain contact with some of them and I tell you (given their potential) I'm disappointed with how they turned out (Father forgive me for being judgemental). The system their just makes them not to see the light. At the end of the day, the only ones who make it, are those who succeeded in politics and a few businessmen (Indimi, Gigiri Gashua, Ibeto, Ali Modu Sheriff, etc). While the rest just trudge along or wait for Sadaka from the rich. In my opinion, it's that failure to transform knowledge acquired to practical application that is the cause of the problems in the North. Ok, after mastering all the Arabic, what next? Why is it that most Igbos who reside there turn out to be business leaders but same cannot be said about most Northerners who come down South (remember I didn't say all)? @OP, Queen Eliza did not look shocked in that pic. To me, she appeared to look fascinated. The same way I'd do when I study microbes under a microscope. No offence. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

being educated means that you went to an european mindset school, and european will never let you being an original person wake up to your original state. Thus Black educated simply mean functional illiteracy (to be able to learn off hand without the use of the brain, without a single knowledge of the person you are. I will choose to be always literate with the completely knowledge of who I am and the knowledge of my surroundings and terrain. SilentPrince: 1 Like 1 Share |

Tinyemeka: Well, being fascinated actually captured it better than shocked cos to be held spellbound is a great look. The Hausas (not the whole Northern Nigeria) have always been literate from probably the 15th/16th century and I believe they have tons of written documents dating back to that period, as part of Songha empire, with other cultures across West Africa. 1 Like |

samkevie: Do you folks here realise that the first UNIVERSITY in the world was based on ARABIC SCRIPT and existed in Africa. The problem with the north is mis-application of Knowledge, trying to be more arab than the arab. If you raed well nd widely about Africn History, you discover that as far back as 16 century some Ghanan were already in europe studing there and some rose to become outstanding in their chosen fields; but the european will never ackwonledge them (there are allegations that some of the well known european philosophies and laws were of African origin). Think about this............... 2 Likes |

anonimi: You will not derail this thread. The fact is established that Northerners have been literate and educated since before the arrival of the colonialists, and girl child education has been encouraged since the 60's contrary to the common belief held by southerners. If you want to discuss the statistics and metrics of the failure/success of government educational policies across both military and civilian administrations, you are at liberty to create a thread for that. 1 Like |

SilentPrince: Northerners has been gaining prior to independent, their advantage of being literate, that is the brain behind ruling the country and doing well which the southern counterparts refused to understand Nothing like "born to rule " bt being knowledgeable and ability to lead, From Tafawa Balewa, sir Sardauna, Murtala, Gowon, and Sai Buhari the incorruptible. It's on record that the white has embraced north cos they met them learned and with organised system. |

abdulaz:there's a great difference between the Arab world, then, and now compared to what we have today in the north. The Arabs, being the foundation of Islam ventured into other fields of discipline. One can't say much of northern muslims(majority) whose first and only priority is Islamic education. |

Female genital mutilation is in South not North, I challenge you to name one community in the north that practise it? And what is wrong with sharia? If you are educated as you claim to be you will not have problem with sharia. SilentPrince: |

The system that Nigeria run since independent till today, benefit the northern Nigeria : federal character principle, quota system, revenue sharing formula, all. That's why in Senate and national assembly they are half of the electorate. Since the system above favour the north, in education they are low but they will keep occupying key position. |

abdulaz: You talk as if northerners are arabs themselves. The same way the europeans brought their lifestyle and belief to us is the same way the ancient arabs and their puppets brought in arab traditions to the entity now called nigeria(precisely northern nigeria). Almajiris are fluent in reading and writing arabic, but same people cannot be categorized as educated. Or why do you think they(these almajiris) can hardly think for themselves and are easily manipulated/brainwashed by their mallams |

Deepsky: The north never been weak compare to south, prior to colonial rule, in the north, there was rules and regulations, leadership, security, courts the system is relatively well then because of the Islamic dwelling b4 the western. As a result north dominate and provide good leadership to the country. |

SaniSANOH: Mr muslim, firstly it is "literate" and NOT litrate. You can't even spell this common word and u are here singing northern(muslims) have been literate for ages. Secondly she was neither shocked nor surprised. Northern Muslims have recited the quran for hundreds of years and that is what the children in the picture were doing. They were being indoctrinated and not learning anything helpful. Mind u they were reciting the arabic in 7th century classical arabic (like u muslims still do today) which is very very DIFFERENT from 19th(when the pic was taken), 20th, 21st century etc arabic. They recite the fallacies in the quran without knowing the meaning. So calm down with ur conjecture. 1 Like |

bilal4riid: The SW actually didn't have any problems with the British colonial rule, it was the Easterners that had not developed any established form of government or administration that gave the British headaches. It is a fact that the British had to introduce the monarchy system by introducing the concept of Eze's. Even in their local parlance, they confirm they don't have any administrative systems (Igbo amu Eze or something like that). 1 Like
