This was one of the reasons why the ooni's death was yet to be announced. Your emotions at the demise of a king and marriage of his prince can't be simultaneously done at the same time. The event was planned to hold but death is a spoiler of things, it came calling unannounced and when it's never welcome. What they have done is like saying which I believe also "death where is thy sting, grave where is thy victory?"

RIP OBA OF ILE-IFE.. grin

There is nothing in Yorubaland or culture known as OBA OF ILE IFE.

ILE IFE has no OBA.

I have attended scores of weddings where the Oba of the town is invited to the wedding and sends his staff...not a strange thing. Guess it makes sense to use the same as his representation in this case as well...

DDoubleUps:
Africans refusing to give up barbaric cultures and traditions since time inmemorial... placing so much importance to so much shit and paying little attention to the betterment of the human race...

Sorry o, but how is it barbaric?, because am so sure if it were something that involved the Queen of England it won't be barbaric, am sure if it were one of the white princes it won't be barbaric, try and be proud of your culture, heritage and home, because when you don't no one will.

N.B. It's not only in Africa that they practice vodoo or anything bizarre, if people can go in search of powers and join cult to become vampires, celebrities, e.t.c over there in the western world, then i see no reason Africans shouldn't practice their own traditions.

Even if he were to be allive, he wouldnt have attended, OBA's don't beg for wives traditionally, His high chiefs and staff will represent him.

Traditionally, the mere fact that the Chiefs allowed the staff to be taken out of the palace means they have not recognized the king's demise.

Once the passage is publicly announced, even the personal property of the king and his siblings in the palace cannot be taken out again. They are deemed forfeited to the community. The first tell-tale sign of a king's death is the moving out of royal family's personal items from the palace before the announcement.

Erm....from what I heard of Yoruba culture and most indigenous cultures in Africa, there is nothing like ex-prince, oh! shocked
Once a prince, always a prince. "Prince" means you are the son of a king, or that your father once ruled a town, village or city. Even if that father is long dead! wink

I have seen the staff of office at burials of royal princes and princess who died at an old age but hailed from a royal household, even though their parents were long dead. undecided

Ok then
Thanx for the update

Nice... It's high time people start knowing that life has a limit...

No matter how Wealthy/poor, tall/short, Full/hungry.. It won't ever change the fact that death is always at the corner..

So why held on to vain elements? undecided

This life should NOT be seen as a Prison yard, but as a Playful ground...

A powerful man in Yorubaland dies, yet a new family is getting together for formation....

Such a little life...
truth is indeed bitter to some. Life is transient.

In traditional Yoruba society, a King (Oba) does not die. Instead, he 'joins' his ancestors. He is also not given public burial. The day the Oba ascends the throne of his ancestors that day he concedes to not being public interred, according to Christian and Muslim funerary rites, whenever he finally 'joins' his ancestors. Ultimately, certain (deadly) rituals has to be performed, explaining why those-in-the-know keep very tight lips over his demise, until the rituals are satisfactorily completed. Only then can Ooni's demise be exclusively announced by the Obalufe, one of the traditional kingmakers, who is saddled with that responsibility. Incidentally, we now live in an information technology age where it's evermore difficult to keep secret, secret.

And, by the way, the King's staff of office at an event (e.g. funerals which Yoruba kings do not physically attend) indicates his presence.
