The Senate on Tuesday, August 11, has asked the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to immediately abolish fixed charges on electricity consumption, bulk marketing of villages and communities.

This was made known after a motion by Sen. Sam Egwu (Ebonyi North) titled; ‘Unfair Trade Practices of Electicity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) in Nigeria’ was raised.

It was co-sponsored by Sen. David Umaru (Niger East).

Also, it directed NERC to ask the DISCOs to discontinue the practice of compulsory bulk metering of villages and communities in the rural areas as a consumer should have the right to elect to be part of bulk metering scheme or not.

The senate also directed NERC to a make a regulation to mandate the DISCOs to discontinue the practice of making consumers pay for meters, ‎poles and transformers which by law are property of the DISCOs.

Them wan chop us to the bone.

NERC is toothless, maybe the are so corrupt sha as they cannot match the power wield by NCC. If NCC have not been functioning in Nigeria then we all will be suffocating in terms of telecommunications. We need their equivalent in the power sector. I believe the consumer protection agency is doing little or nothing to help the plight of Nigerians.

Funny thing is they are just there to make money and never to contribute any meaningful quota to the development or improvement of the power sector. Just to come dispatch bills to customers in the middle of the month is what they know how to do best, dangling electricity pole they'll close eye to them until they fall down, taking other good ones on the way down. Then they will tell communities to contribute in order to get them back working...(They'll overfeed from the proceed and also gain by not outputting anything during the wait, 1,2 or 3months), those are theer pleasures.

Even using pre-paid meters now is very expensive. BEDC charges like minimum of ₦800/month on fixed charges while customers using bills (if you do not have meter) are charged ₦4500 monthly even if there was no like for 29.5 days and you are using a one room apartment and charging your Nokia 201 only.

That is if you are on prepaid meters.
What of the crazy bills on the postpaid customers?

PHCN or NEPA was sold to enrich the big boys, The sole reason behind fixed charge is to enable them recover their investment on the privatization. Why should the government sell the organisation to individuals who doesn't have the financial muscle at first?!

Why do we still have un-metered houses if not for exploitation?
