The All Progressives Congress, APC, seems to be getting ready to dance on the graves of the dead as the ruling party is set to roll out drums at the end of the month to mark the two year anniversary of the coming together of major opposition political parties to clinch victory at the presidential polls...

Speaking in an interview with journalists in Abuja the party’s National Organising Secretary and the Chairman of the anniversary committee, Osita Izunaso, said APC had every reason to celebrate its existence as a political party because of it numerous achievements recorded in the last two years.

As President Muhammadu Buhari’s 100 days in office beckons, most Nigerians are of the view apart from seizing power from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on March 28, presidential election, the APC has not fulfilled its any of its campaign promises, especially in the area of insecurity.

Most critics of the ruling party, have equated the last general elections to a coup by supposed the northern majority against a southern minority.

The only factor that united the north was “operation kick out Former President Goodluck Jonathan from power either by hook or by crook.”

“What is the APC celebrating for? The falling Naira against the Dollar, the non-appointment of Ministers after 100 days of APC administration, the no clear cut economic policies, the lopsided appointments, the face-off in the National Assembly or is it the increasing waves of insurgency since the inception of Buhari’s administration on May 29,” a critic queried.

Reports indicate that more than 1000 Nigerians have been brutally massacred in the hands of insurgents despite Buhari’s promise to end the deadly scourge in 2 months if elected.

The terror group stepped up its attacks in Borno and two neighbouring states right after Buhari came to power in May.

The fresh wave of violence has claimed more than 1,000 lives over the last three months, dealing a setback to a four-country offensive launched in February that had recorded a number of victories against the armed group.

The APC, rolling out their drums to celebrate is like dancing on the grave of the dead.

The latest was Saturday’s ambush where a convoy carrying the new head of the Nigeria army, sparked off clashes in which 10 fighters and a soldier were killed.

Tukur Buratai, who was last month appointed Chief of Army Staff, was unharmed in the attack, which occurred as he was visiting troops in the northeastern village of Faljari in Borno State.

For the APC, they have every course to celebrate.

Osita stated that it was unprecedented that within two years of the APC’s registration as a party, it had 22 Governors, control of the two chambers of the National Assembly and also President Muhammadu Buhari as the number one citizen of Nigeria.

“We also want to use the avenue for internal soul search to let ourselves know that the task ahead is more than the one behind,” he said.

Izunaso said the event to celebrate the party’s successes would hold by the end of August in Abuja.

“We are getting world class resource persons to speak to us on the role of a political party in emerging government and as well talk about our change mantra, what to do to effect the change.

“We shall hear talks on the change our party is championing, is it change of attitude or otherwise, these are the aspects we will be looking at.

“We have secured the date and the guest speakers are fine tuning ahead of it, I can say authoritatively that one of the guest speakers will be Professor Ibrahim Gambari, former Nigeria’s permanent representatives to the United Nations. We are also finalising the arrangements to get speakers outside the country,” he revealed.

“It is unprecedented that within two years of being registered as a party, we have won the general elections, it is unprecedented that within two years of being registered as a party, we have 22 Governors elected on the platform of the party.

“It is also unprecedented that within two years of our registration, we are controlling the two chambers of the National Assembly, these are the things we considered as giant stride achievements that begged for the celebration of our great party on its second year as a political party.”
