Ereko was derived from Erekusi.

Eko, Ereko and Erekusi are all words for farm.

Binis did not come to Lagos to farm but when they got there Island was already a farmland called Erekusi by the Aworis across the lagoon at Ido, Oto, Apa and Ijora.

Erekusi later became Ereko and then Eko. Apa later became Apapa.

According to my granny

Ereko = Everglades

Erekosu = Island

And these are corrupted to Eko.

Your name for Lagos and mine are not different.
Iyepe and Erupe are cognates.

Whatever we call it, we have established firmly and conclusively that Lagos had a known indigenous name and was adopted by the settling Binis.

Our silence in the past and naively dismissing their online insults has achieved only one thing....their entrenched resolve and belief that Yoruba is not the owner of Lagos.

Each ethnic group has its monopoly in the affairs of man and society in this country. Yoruba monopolises politics and with little effort put on ground we are naturally endowed with ability to bring about a tsunami of social overhaul and redirection. We have done this repeatedly .....even before the Independence of Nigeria.

The Ibos have a monopoly of chatter. They are naturally gifted with the ability to speak tenaciously and convincingly to whittle down whatever truths their opponents bring forth. In the carelessness of their targeted opponents, their lies often become the truth.

Yoruba leaders have studied them and discovered this strength and formulated a way to water it down and kill it from forming.

Some of us online are not here because we love social media. We are here to purposely humiliate Ibo and destroy his monopoly on noise.....and trust me, we have done a fantastic job in the past 2years...not just in Nairaland, but all over the internet.

In Nairaland alone, we have killed Ibo's ownership of Olaudah Ekuanoh, an Etsako slave falsely claimed as Ibo. The one that truly shook the country was the mystery behind the Queen's visit in 1956 and the role.played by Sir Ojukwu and his phantom Rolls Royce.
God bless those guys called mythbuster. Even the National Archives had to take note and correct its records. Can you believe? A whole national institution vested with the duty of keeping historical records was sold a phantom story by Ibo and they believed it and entered it into record.

So, no my friend....you do what you are here to do, enjoy and be entertained...and allow us to do our job of keeping Yoruba records safe and credible from Ibo falsehood.

Kazeem you should spend more time hunting down christians in oshogbo than taking this onglorious path of revisionism that leads to a dead end.
We will always be here to remind you that Binis colonized and name
Lagos 'eko' which is a Bini word. grin

They also gave you Kingship, they sent Oduduwa to come rule over you. like OsazUWA, ErediUWA, Oduduwa is a Bini name. That's a sacred factoid. grin

Finally while you guys were busy hunting yourselves for spot and eating your human flesh during kiriji wars. An Igbo man straight of the Bight of Biafra, known as Olaudah Ikwuano(Equaino) was writting his autobiography(as a first black man to write an autobio) where he lectured the modern world about Igbo Four market days- Ekeh, Oye, Afor, Nkwo days. He even talked about men who rubbed 'uhie' from Aro to come buy slaves at Eke ututu market in Isseke. Go grab a copy.

www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/equiano_olaudah.shtml

Olaudah
Equiano, c.1789 © Equiano was an
African writer whose experiences as
a slave prompted him to become
involved in the British abolition
movement.
In his autobiography, Olaudah
Equiano writes that he was born in
the Eboe province, in the area that is
now southern Nigeria. He describes
how he was kidnapped with his sister
at around the age of 11, sold by local
slave traders and shipped across the
Atlantic to Barbados and then Virginia.
In the absence of written records it is
not certain whether Equiano's
description of his early life is accurate.
Doubt also stems from the fact that, in
later life, he twice listed a birthplace in
the Americas.
Apart from the uncertainty about his
early years, everything Equiano
describes in his extraordinary
autobiography can be verified. In
Virginia he was sold to a Royal Navy
officer, Lieutenant Michael Pascal, who
renamed him 'Gustavus Vassa' after
the 16th-century Swedish king.
Equiano travelled the oceans with
Pascal for eight years, during which
time he was baptised and learned to
read and write.
Pascal then sold Equiano to a ship
captain in London, who took him to
Montserrat, where he was sold to the
prominent merchant Robert King.
While working as a deckhand, valet
and barber for King, Equiano earned
money by trading on the side. In only
three years, he made enough money
to buy his own freedom. Equiano
then spent much of the next 20 years
travelling the world, including trips to
Turkey and the Arctic. Kazeem you should spend more time hunting down christians in oshogbo than taking this onglorious path of revisionism that leads to a dead end.
