U.S. Warns of Potential Attack on Nigeria Consulate by SamMilla1(m): 1:57pm On Apr 05, 2009
LAGOS, Nigeria – The U.S. diplomatic mission in Nigeria said Sunday it had received reports of plans for a possible attack against its consulate in the southern city of Lagos.

Officials said in a circular sent to U.S. citizens that Nigerian police had increased their vigilance around the consulate and were closely monitoring traffic nearby. The mission called on U.S. citizens to report any suspicious activity there.

The circular from the Abuja-based embassy and the Lagos consulate gave no further information. A U.S. Embassy spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

In September 2007, the U.S. Embassy said it had received information that Western and U.S. interests were at threat from a terrorist attack in Nigeria. The U.S. State Department said it was not responding to any specific threat.

Nigeria, which is a major supplier of crude oil to the United States, has never suffered a terrorist attack. The population of 140 million people is evenly split between Christians and Muslims.

The U.S. maintains a large consular services office in Lagos, a chaotic, crime-ridden city of 14 million people on Nigeria's southern coast.

Can you give your own version of how you think the report should end then?

The report should have ended this way:
The U.S. maintains a large consular services office in Lagos, a beautiful, easy-going, crime-free city of 9 million people on Nigeria's southern coast.

The U.S. maintains a large consular services office in Lagos, a chaotic, crime-ridden city of 14 million people on Nigeria's southern coast.

This statement above is just pure propaganda,

Question: Is there crime and corruption in Nigeria.
Answer: Yes

Question: Is there crime and corruption in Europe
Answer: Yes

Question: Is there crime and corruption in South Africa
Answer: Yes

Question: Is there crime and corruption in USA
Answer: Yes

Question: Should they have used the statement "The U.S. maintains a large consular services office in Lagos, a chaotic, crime-ridden city of 14 million people on Nigeria's southern coast" at the end of the original post
Answer: NO

Question: WHY
Answer: Because that statement had no connection to the original message and reasonable reason for it to have been used

Question: Why do you think it was used.
Answer: For propaganda purposes

1. Crime, Gun problem, HIV, Corruption in Nigeria is nothing compared to what is happening in the US, however the US/Western owned media would never mention that because :
    - They are trying to protect American/European Image and tarnish Nigerian image so that US/Western image would relatively better
    - Wall Street, US Senate Corruption, US Congress Corruption is more serious than that of Nigeria its only that you would hardly find it reported in the news, e.g. the TARP fund was a corrupt arngement between US politicians and Global Elite Banks.
    - US criminals affect both the US and the World, while Nigerian criminals only affect Nigeria in most cases, e.g. Bernie Maddoff involved in $50billion fraud
    - America is a country dominated by White people (European Americans and all) and those White people have always been trying to make every other race look inferior by their propaganda and discrimination, (hence the statement against Nigeria should not be a suprise)
    - America looks good if they keep implying that Nigeria looks bad.
    - It is a silent form of racism (i.e. silently denegrading the other race to ensure that they always feel physically and pshychologically inferior)
    - They would never do that to south africa because although blacks are ruling south africa, yet it is still a "white upper class" dominated economy, hence it would go against the interest of white south africans to point out the obvious (there is far more crime in South Africa than Nigeria, there is far more crime in the US than Nigeria).
     - The negative press that they are giving Nigerians is the same negative press and discrimination that they have been using against the African Americans in US for a long time now,

THE WORLD IS DOMINATED MILITARILY AND FINANCIALY BY WHITE PEOPLE, HENCE THEY WANT TO MAINTAIN THAT DOMINATION BY LYING AND TRYING TO DESTROY THE GLOBAL IMAGE OF BLACK DOMINATED COUNTRIES LIKE NIGERIA OR ARAB DOMINATED COUNTRIES OR ASIAN DOMINATED COUNTRIES LIKE CHINA. SOUTH AFRICA IS AN EXCEPTION BECAUSE SOUTH AFRICAN ECONOMY AND MILITARY IS OBVIOUSLY STILL DOMINATED BY WHITES HENCE THE REASON WHY SOUTH AFRICA DOES NOT HAVE SO MUCH NEGATIVE PUBLICITY.

2. Let us remember that the NeoCons (Neo Conservatives i.e a war mongering group of predomonantly white people intent on continuing the world domination by USA). One way that the NeoCons achieves this is by constantly creating a war in a country that they want to control its resources so that such a country would be destroyed developmentally and so that those NeoCons would then be able to controll that country's resources during the time of war and after the war and unrest .e.g. Iraq, Kuwait.
Hence that is mainly the reason why they were trying to setup up the military unit known as Africom. Fortunately Nigeria is one of the countries that opposed AfriCom hence the NeoCons via the US Government is doing everything possible to undermine Nigeria so that they can then use that to bring about AfriCom and thus use AfriCom to control African Resources (e.g. Oil and other Raw Materials). However most African countries have rejected Africom being stationed in Africa because most Africans have common sense and thus they know that AfriCom would just be another form of slavery under an occupying force of US origin. That is why the US is using every possible means to instigate violence in Africa, make the image of Africng and Nigeria look bad by lying about the extent and gravity of crime and corruption, pretend as if Africa and Nigeria is under a terrorist threat. This is all because it would then give US an excuse to invade Nigerian soil under the excuse of protecting Africans and US embassies in countries like Nigeria.

3. Remember the British intentionally handed over power to the Hausas in nigeria because they know that it would always create instability and hence it would always hamper the growth of Nigeria and hence it would always allow the Western World to control Nigerian resources via proxy.

4. US is completely bancrupt financially (i.e. they owe about 14Trillion dollars debt overall when one includes all levels of government) hence they are always looking forward to steal (through wars) the resources of any country (e.g. Nigeria, Iraq etc) they can get so as to remain afloat ,  (hence the Iraq War, to control the Oil and create more money via military spending, hence the Iran bickering in other to instigate war and control their oil and also please the Arabs us of their money, iranians are not arabs by the way). Even China is fed up with the US debt, hence they want to stop lending them money.

5. Robert Mugabe (who is himself a very corrupt individual) understands that White people have been stealing resources and land, decided to use the stolen land issue against the West, hence why the West is against him, because the West knows that if Mugabe succeeds, other people would start using the same tactics against them.
Even the Brazilian native indians have started reclaiming their lands stolen by the proxies or descendants of white people. South Africa already has the problem of land ownership in that descendants of white settlers own some of the land while South African Natives are still landless.
Aboriginal aborigines had their land stolen from them since 1700s,

HENCE WE MUST UNDERSTAND THAT THE WHITE CONTROLLED MEDIA WOULD ALWAYS USE PROPAGANDA TO ENHANCE THE POLICIES AND INTEREST OF THE WHITE RACE WHETHER WE LIKE IT OR NOT ,

I see someone on here has not been watching the US media (BBC America, ABC, NBC, FOX, and CBS) at all. Only the past couple of days, the media have bombarded people with so many stories of gloom and doom trying to connect them to the recession and someone still believes the US media works to shield the world from what is happening in America. People in Nigeria calling to make sure their loved ones in America were not affected. Nigerians and excuses!! roflmao!!!

1. Inferiority complex is a serious Black man problem ,  and am seeing it a little bit in your statements, your statements sound something u think: if the white man says it, then it must be true and appropriate.
wat a load of rubbish , Abeg wake up ,

2. Western would never solve Nigeria's problem, Nigerians are the ones to solve their problems, hence don't deceive yourself thinking that because the western media mentions nigerian problems (in a particular way) then it means they did it truthful and are interested in solving it ,  grin "such naivety" , that is so far away from the truth.

3. You don't need the western media to detail the problems in Nigeria, before you know there is a problem in  Nigeria. Nigerians already know about the problems in Nigeria.
Western Media purses western interest, so don't be deceived. Western media does not mention nigerian problems because they love nigerians or want to help out, rather the western media is doing so because it is in their own interest to do so.

4. If you get off your high horse and take the time to read my previous posts, stop drinking the Koolaid, you would realise that the point i am trying to make.

5. I never said Nigeria did not have problems, yes Nigeria has serious problems, however they are not as serious as the Western Media is portraying them to be.

6. I never said Nigerian problems should never be reported. However there is always a sincere motive or ulterior motive to every action.

7. All I am saying is that the way it was reported "smells" of ulterior motives and propaganda.

8. Nigerian problem is not as worse as it is being reported, yet worse cases in the Western world are not being given the same negative coverage like they have given Nigeria.

9. The point I am making with seems too simple for you geniuses can be easily explained with this example

- California has a crime, drug, corruption problem, terrorist attack problem, homosexuality problem, forest fire susceptibility and earthquake prone problem however you would never see another western/nigerian journalist include the following kind of hypothetical statement at the end of a report about california

Nigeria maintains a large consular services office in California, a sodomic, homosexual infested, drug addicted, forest fire problem, corruption riddled state of millions people susceptible to earthquakes and terrorist attacks on the West Coast of the United States

This is because "common sense",tells the person that although the statement is true, nevertheless the time, place and method of usage of such a statement is inappropriate so much so that it "smells" like pure propaganda against the state of california.

By the way, I'm not saying I'm on the writer's side.

1. That is why the media is good at brainwashing people ,  with the kind of images they want people to remember.

2. Dooh, exactly,  california is known as a city of hollywood and palm trees and celebrities, because that is that side of California that the media constantly wants people to see,

IF THE MEDIA WAS CONSTANTLY BOMBARDING US WITH IMAGES OF EARTHQUAKES, DRUG ADDICTION, CRIME, CORRUPTION, HOMOSEXUALITY, SODOMY AND FOREST FIRES INSTEAD OF PALM TREES AND CELEBRITIES, OFF COURSE MOST PEOPLE WOULD HAVE A NEGATIVE AND BAD IMAGE OF CALIFORNIA.

Apart from Nigeria, another example of this brainwashing and media manipulation of public perception is the case of the drug war going on in Mexico.

For example, the only side of Mexico being reported in the news today is the "Drug Wars",  the American media makes it look like the "Drug War" in Mexico is so bad that the real Mexican Natives are now running away from Mexico, yet that is not exactly "the whole truth". Instead what the american media is doing is what is called "molding of public perception".

Hence you see, THE POINT I AM MAKING IS THAT THERE IS ALWAYS A BIG PICTURE to a particular issue or media report, hence Africans and Nigerians should never be naive enough to not see beyond the surface of particular media report and motive of why a particular news report was allowed on the air or news print in the western media.

Very true. But we all watch the documentaries about the gang culture which Los Angeles is being famed for and there's no hiding place when it comes to this as no amount of spinwould do it any good really however as much as the media still try to put a spin to a story, would you at least say how you think the report should have ended?

You should know controversy sells and the media themselves are tryign to sell papers so they have no choice but to use the very left winged choice of words which would paint the very picture they want people to see. Either way though,I don't think there's any form of propaganda in the report.Though I think the motto of journalism is being taken to the extreme by trying to milk the negativity of Lagos State to the extreme but come on now, you can't say we readers are too naive to say the problems being reported in Nigeria are that subtle that we should now try to crucify the messenger and ignore the message.

It could easily have been written as this such that the main message (i.e. potential attack on embassy) remains the same, while removing the unneccessary propaganda at the end.

Hence the following modification would still have conveyed the same main message of a warning about a "terrorist attack" on the US Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria.

The U.S. maintains a large consular services office in Lagos, a city of 14 million people on Nigeria's southern coast.

Hence would obviously notice the difference between the propaganda free version given as

The U.S. maintains a large consular services office in Lagos, a city of 14 million people on Nigeria's southern coast.

and the propaganda full version given as

The U.S. maintains a large consular services office in Lagos, a chaotic, crime-ridden city of 14 million people on Nigeria's southern coast.

I am not saying all readers of the original post about Nigeria are naive, instead what i am saying is that those readers who read the original post about Nigeria, then went ahead to claim there was no problem with the propaganda at the last statement of that original post, are the ones who are naive about past and present global politics, about past and present global policies, about past and present economic policies.

3. Go through all my posts on this thread you would notice that I never said Nigeria did not have problems.

4. Instead I clearly said that Nigeria had crime and corruption problems

5. I also clearly said that Nigerian crime and/or corruption problems is small compared to the global scale or seriousness of crime and/or corruption in certain Western countries like the USA and certain African countries such as South Africa. (e.g. Bernie Maddoff $50 billion ponzi scam to say the least)

6. Above all, the point I am making is that the report in question had no reason to include the statement about the crime problems of Lagos Nigeria in their report, simply because such a statement had absolutely nothing to do with the initial "terrorism" case they were trying to present with regards to their Nigerian US Embassy.

7. Hence the point I was making was that including that statement about "Lagos being riddled with Crime" is just a propaganda statement meant for ulterior motives and nothing more.

8. Then i finally went ahead to show the possible reasons why the western media has been using propaganda statements.

Good reasoning. I have renewed hope for Nairaland.

Sure you do!!! Even the crazy goon next door will make the same claim while he feeds me stories of how he was probed by aliens in his sleep last night!

Oh!! So it is naïve to accept that what was written is FACTUAL, regardless of the hidden intent of the writer, but it not naïve to pretend to read the mind of the writer of the writer from thousands of miles away?

3. Go through all my posts on this thread you would notice that I never said Nigeria did not have problems.

Nigeria having problems or not has never been an issue. In fact any sane normal human being ACCEPTS that there are problems anywhere. However, the difference lies in how the problems are being tackled, if they are being tackled at all. So your continued mention that Nigeria has problems and so does the USA makes me wonder why anyone who understands that there are problems EVERYWHERE would busy himself with such.

No2Atheism:

4. Instead I clearly said that Nigeria had crime and corruption problems

Crime/Corruption/Problems have never at any time in history been solely a Nigerian thing. Every living being seems to understand that problems exist and that is why we all continue to work to overcome them on a daily basis. It is basic fact of life. Do you also have to tell us that Nigerians breathe air just as Americans and bangladeshians do??

Where is Maddoff as we speak? He is in Jail, serving the rest of his life. Where is IBB? He is roaming free and proud, and might even come back as your next president. Only recently news on the Halliburton bribery scandal informed us that the men involved were being investigated and tried in the USA. Those on our own end who were involved do not have the same pressure on them. They are walking large and are more likely to have more chieftaincy titles bestowed upon then than they are to serve any jail term or pay any fines for their involvement in the bribery scandal. Again, it is not about how much money or what problems exists and where. It is about how the problem is being dealt with, if it is being dealt with at all. And do not bother come back with the Nigeria is trying line. I only mentioned that I hoped some day, some of the allegations against the CBN governor would be investigated by the EFCC and some goon went on insulting himself claiming he had himself, not me, all figured out as some naïve slowpoke for even thinking that could ever happen.

Maddoff is in Jail. His name is ruined and the courts are working on going after his family and everyone else that had potentially gained from this.

The case would be completely different if Nigeria were crime ridden but countered that with a super crime fighting force. That happens to be the situation in most places around the world. When people talk of security, they do not speak of non-existence of crime but of their trust in law enforcement agency in the area they consider secure.

Crime problems have nothing to do with terrorism? Try again!

You still believe you can read minds, huh??

Couldn’t it also be possible that that line has absolutely nothing to do with all you have outlined as possible reasons? Could it not simply be a writer trying to spice up his/her story so it catches attention of folks like you who tend to read extra meanings into most everything out there? I mean at the end of the day, the media makes more money by hooking the minds of conspiracy theorists out there. Books on such seem to make millions for their authors and they know it is not the average viewer that they need to spend so much time on pleasing but the many out there who believe the world revolves around them and their perception of the world around them.
