Construction works ongoing at the 2nd Niger bridge were reportedly stopped few weeks ago due to directives from the federal government.

The bridge which connects the south east to the south west was flagged off on March 10, 2014 by former President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to be completed in 48 months (March 2018). The major aim is to reduce the burden on the first bridge and to alleviate the transportation stress on Nigerians plying the route.

According to reports, the federal government had called for a halt in construction of the bridge because of concerns expressed in some quarters about possible over inflation of contracts and alleged misappropriation of funds and also because of ongoing scuffles in the area by youths due to complaints of non compensation by government despite earlier promising to do so.

Mixed reports have since trailed work at the bridge as regards to state and stage of the project. The FCT Post can EXCLUSIVELY report on state of work on the second Niger bridge and more importantly on the stage of work.

Our correspondent was not allowed to travel further into areas of bridge location to get a more close up view, due to the heavy presence of Security operatives deployed as a result youth agitations and general restiveness in the area.
