After paying an average of 10 to 15k per trip , at gun point if i might add, I am really open Options

My guy, unless you wan drive inside bush - and that is not safe either - i dont know of any other way. I would have said that you get some 'escorts' (Army, police, customs, immigrations officers) to follow you, but you would still have to pay them about the same 10 - 15k per trip grin

There should be an old route to ibadan via ikorodu almost parallel to the current expressway. Have no idea on the safety and condition of the road though.

@poster
sorry but i think theres an exaggeration in the 10-15k figure,i was on that same road in 2007 and while one had to pay bribes,it was nowhere near 5000 talk less of 10,000,you have no choice but to grin and bear it as the alternative 'll be contending with armed robbers and car jackers throwing oranges with nails in them at your tires or the old trick of roadblocks, unless theres something else you r carrying that you v not disclosed,if they were making 10k off each driver,then they should be billionaires by now

I actually thought about this but forgot to ask the poster to clarrify. I only assumed that he is probably buying and selling cars (which i know those customs officers capitalize on) and has to settle the guys in uniform along the road. Once those guys see a new car, with new number plates, they always stop you especially at Ogerre toll gate (i think thats the name of that place)

I had a colleague who used to do the same and he complained about the same thing until he started paying uniformed guys to follow him to Ibadan, Ife and parts of the North via the lagos-ibadan express. That is why i jumped to that conclusion

OYA POSTER, EXPLAIN YOURSELF PROPERLY O! Are you carrying anything or selling anything? Otherwise, i dont see why they should stop you. I worked in Lagos for many years and my family was in Ibadan. I used to ply that road almost every weekend and nobody stopped me

@ lucabrasi

that was a long time ago. What happens now is that Gun Totting customs officials now man the old tollgate at Ogere and they stop any car they feel like. They then ask for the custom papers that was used to ship your car into the country (which is actually not my business as i bought it from a dealer as long as i can prove that i did not steal it with authentic particulars), when i you them that you have no idea what they are talking about, they will order you out of your car at gun point and drive your car back to Lagos, and then my friend, you will never see your car again. If you are lucky, you will get to pay 200 - 250k to bail your car out of the customs impound. Here is how it works.

Cars that are older than one year are supposed to be exempt from this shake down but instead they ask you to pay N3,000 - N5,000 depending on your bargaining skills.

For cars that are still under a year old, you start your negotiation from N60,000 and you beat it down from there ( but there is not much space for beating down below N40,000)

For repeat offenders with cars under a year old - like me, if you are able to prove to them that you have been a good customer and that they should not worry cos you will see them again in a couple of weeks, then you pay like N10,000 to N15,000.

Some people could be more lucky than i have been or could have better negotiating skill. but the only way you will not be stopped is if you are driving a brand new ( elizade ) class of car.

@ epiphany

Bros, situation don change oh.
I have a cubicle office in lagos doing honest underpaying work for a multinational firm and so i'm not into importing and exporting. There was a time when they used to stop only new numbers, but now they have gone rogue on us all, they stop all numbers both new and old.

I also have family in Ibadan but i have to reduce the frequency of my visits because of this new economic-reality (customs) on the road now.
