As someone whose direct family member and a very personal friend were kidnapped recently, I am compelled out of personal conviction, holy anger (even madness if you like) and a sense of duty to Nairalanders and Nigerians to comment on this subject –I will manage to choose my words carefully and avoid sweeping generalization but pardon me if I err in presenting my views –it is not out of malice, mischief, or any disrespect to Nairalanders who may be Policemen. If you or anyone you know ever gets kidnap, I beg you NEVER to rely on the Police for rescue. The person kidnapped may be killed. I don’t even know where to start from, is it to talk of the case being bungled or the kidnappers being tipped off? Is it to talk of you being asked to pay ransom money which not get to the kidnappers in full and they will out of anger kill the hostage? In one instance, the wife of the kidnap victim had to pay five thousand Naira to fuel the Police vehicle that went to inspect the crime scene. In fact, when a victim was released recently, he said while he was in the kidnap camp, a Police Divisional Officer (DPO) was kidnapped and brought there! The only difference was that the Police took this one serious and threatened the local chief of the area and the DPO was eventually released. The kidnappers even told their victim that they were not afraid of anyone. After releasing their victim, they retained his vehicle but drove it freely to hand it over to their victim later –on Nigerian roads! No surveillance, no tracking, no technology to intercept kidnappers communications even when the kidnappers are frequently making calls to negotiate ransom? It’s a huge shame and disaster, a national calamity, a slap on our collective intelligence. Pray never to be kidnapped, live very low profile, be circumspect in your lifestyle and financial transactions. The change mantra needs to be extended urgently and radically to the Nigerian Police. Good night!

Why did they not use all these helicopters and rapid response squad to rescue the kidnapped Chibok school girls when Boko Haram escaped with them in trucks that were not even speeding and one truck broke down for hours. Neither the Nigerian Police nor Nigerian Army showed up.

Having been kidnapped myself and having been involved in negotiating in the release of 2 in-law that suffered the same fate, I'll say that comments here regarding who did and who didn't do what are watery.

I think, there was no proper communication between the police and Falae's family, i believe so strongly that Falae's family arrangement to pay ransom was done by someone who prefers to do business with kidnapers. who paid the ranson and where?

Bail is free yet you guys take money from people right across the counter in the police stations for bail in the full glare of both police and Nigerian citizens and you are here ranting. Idiot.
We have known the Nigerian police as sick babies and idiots for a long time.

Not many Nigerians have the the privilege of high powered police security. For what it is worth I believe Falae family will do well to cooperate with the IGP instead of side talks.

He can only cooperate IF he was alive!

While l do not like rewarding evil (as the IGP has said), l am also not that naive that if Olu Falae has not taken the steps they took, he would be DEAD by now and the Police will still come up with their usual "long story" of "We are investigating".

Is the Police not "still investigating" the death of the country's Attorney General, (Bola Ige) up till today?
Can their lies bring back the dead man?

Simply put, the Nigeria Police, including Arase himself, are clueless and inept when it comes to intelligence-led operations.
Why did the silly Arase not deploy Sniffer Dogs .... instead of Helicopters, to search for kidnappers in a jungle terrain?

Now that they have given him a "clue" he needs to Shut-da-phuck Up and liaise with the family on how they can follow the "Money trail" so as to apprehend the kidnappers.

The Eediot should be thanking Falae for being bold enough to come out openly, with his story, despite the threat that the kidnappers made, to come back for him if he talked
.

My take.

Are you not aware that EVERY COUNTRY, including America, PAYS RANSOM?

They may tell Mugas like you "Publicly" that they dont pay..... but insiders know that they do pay, while at the same time trying to apprehend the kidnappers.

@The bolded.

That ADVICE is worth a hundred million Dollars!

Let me also add:
Be security concious. Take your personal security seriously. Everyone is a potential target, rich or poor (for rituals)!
Be alert to "strange" things in your environment
Stop flaunting wealth
Invest a little of that your wealth, in your personal security
Use common sense in financial dealings
Avoid night marauding
Watch your "associations"

Finally, NEVER TRUST THE NIGERIAN POLICE

from the comments I read sofar Nigeria have a long way to go,even the once that attended higher institutions could not reason well, then how will this nation grow with this poor reasoning. wha do u want police to do, the family of the victim instead of saying thanks to d police for their effort turned against the police, the same police that brought their faher home, thank God they they confess it the the kidnappers dropped the old man in his farm b4 police brought him home, that alone would have given them some reasonable ground to no that police made an attempt rather than fighting police, I have had when kidnapper's after collecting ransom from victims families still killed their victim. Nigeria we really need to grow

the Police was not in any way privy to any arrangement that would have led to payment of ransom.......

Simply put, you guys didn't secure his release.
