I wept when I visited Ajaokuta Steel City last year... Unfortunately, seems like there's been a massive nosedive in the global price of steel (just like oil) in the last year so it would even be more difficult to revive the steel mills now. cry

When the government was trying to handover Ajaokuta to the private sector, you people were shouting.

Corruption killed Ajaokuta, like every other government organizations.

Private sector is the solution.

Make una go read una books, forget this peaceful protest. A lots needs to be done before we can have a competitive steel industry in Nigeria. Have you not heard of China?

we are fresh graduates from different universities... it is you who really needs to read some books..

if you would opt to fold your hands and watch while the state of things in the country goes detrimental, we won't...

a lot of battles have been won in peaceful protest and dialogue..

that is one of the companies and it is rather unfortunate for the UK(2,000 jobs is not a joke) but it does not stop the investments in the ajaokuta,Nigeria.
the cost of UK graded steels is high compared to Chinese steels and you cannot compare their quality.

Let's start from how much steel do we and other West African countries import annually?

How much is needed to awaken Ajaokuta?

And how much steel does West Africa import annually?

And what could be the ripple effect of a performing steel industry? Jobs, manufacturing industries, development, exports, forex and e.t.c.

Sai buhari needs to invest in that area to create more jobs. To me it will be wise to invite the Chinese to manage the sector and teach us the latest technological way of mining steel and processing it, that will go a long way in improving our foreign exchange by exporting to nations and reduce the over dependence on petroleum.

if u have ever worked with the chinese before you would not say this.they only have their own interest at heart.

Please also remember Delta Steel. Shame how a company that poached staff from the oil industry with reckless abandon is now so moribund

I will encourage you to go read and read and read. The simple FACT is: the price of steel has fallen world-over. Nobody will invest in Steel Production as it is in Nigeria. Ajaokuta Blast Furnance is OLD TECHNOLOGY. Delta Steel Company has been sold to Indians and yet, it is not working. The technology is also old. ALSCON has been sold too. Aluminum have even better prospects, however, gas supply and electricity is hugely required...wee are not there yet.

No amount of protest will bring up the price of steel. There are heavy and deep advancements in Materials Science that steel in very large quantities to sustain our steel industry is no longer required. A lot of beneficiation still needs to be done on our ore at Itakpe as well as coal in Enugu. These things cost money. Your peaceful protest will bring nothing. If you are a graduate, focus your energy to develop yourself and become useful. Your Engineering knowledge is not lost.

For your info, I graduated from FUTO and I studied Met/Mat. I now work as a Project Manager.

Hola me in 10 years time, when your protest yields the expected revamping of our steel industry in Ajaokuta and Ovwian-Aladja as well as Ikot Abasi.

Goodluck!

before you go west Africa.let us talk Nigeria
you have two routes
1,build a new facility
2,refit the old one
option 1 is a good idea but has that Nigeria other economic pointers, electricity, transport, proximity to industries, land use etc to talk about(I don't know if fg has enabled the laws for private entry into iron and steel) like what they have done to telecoms and power.
option two has the same bottle new is like Nitel privatisation saga!

you see the problem(s) now!

That's actually the most important aspect to consider.

OTOH, West Africa is ours to either own/colonize, or lose.

unfortunately the current price of steel does not encourage investment in steel mills. A steel mill just closed down in the UK due to dumping by China.

Let's consider if from another point of view. Let's forget about the current price of steel, let's consider the developmental effect, it will create employment, attract other investors and still bring revenue to the national treasury, even though the current price is not encouraging, that does not mean that the nation will run at lost, the worst is that the proffit may not be bouyant. Meanwhile, the current price cannot determine the future price. I want to see more auto assembly and more manufacturing industries in the country, all this will be attributed to the national steel mill.

Countries are fighting to host events like world cup and others!!!! Just hosting an event will be better than this mill or steel thing!! This is the 21st century but Nigeria is still thinking with her anus!

You are the one thinking with your anus!

Is it a country that can't boast of 24/7 electricity, a country battling insecurity and insurgency, a country where corruption is like the air we breath,a country with no current plan on how to move the nation forward cos our president is yet to appoint ministers; that you expect to host an event such as the world cup?

With the insecurity and terrorism going on in north east Nigeria, which right thinking organisation would give us the right to host an event as big as the world cup.

BTW, you have no idea the potential we have in our resource.

Do u know how many steel industries we have in Nigeria? Do you know the number and amount of natural and human resources we are blessed with?

Dude get your head our if ur a$$!!!

They once said the cost of running that plant is high than the cost to import steel. That was in the previous administration
