Isoko is not a sub dialect of Urhobo. They are two ethnic groups with common historical links to Benin. The Isoko language has several sub dialects of its own and many Urhobos can attest to the fact that they can't understand the Isoko language. Despite their common history these two ethnic groups do have some cultural differences. Saying Isoko is a sub dialect of Urhobos is as erroneous as saying Itsekiri is a sub dialect of Yoruba and Benin since they have similar syntax and semantics. Get it straight Urhobos and Isokos; common history, different ethnic groups. 2 Likes 1 Share |

HopeAtHand: Why do I sense hostility among the Ikwerres here in this thread? I have agreed to your "claim" that you are not Igbo with a simple clause that your language is Igboid. Do you still want to deny that your linguistic root is Igboid? Every Language has roots. English is Germanic, Itsekiri is Yoruboid, Urhobo is Edoid, Ikwerre is Igboid. This doesn't make the "oid" groups the same with their superior appellate. It is only a linguistic marker. Dont tell me you dont know that. Please reduce the hostility, I am not an Igbo person nor an Ikwerre person. I am but a simple, calm and docile Urhobo who is stating the truth. 3 Likes |

I can speak the Agbarho/Ughelli version of Urhobo. I understand the others to some extent except Okpe, very difficult......My favourite version of Urhobo is Ujevwen dialect. Just like OP said, they talk as if they are singing. Another thing i like about Ujevwen is their music, even without musical instrument dem still dey make sense 1 Like |

Rene456: If you read my subcategorisation of Isoko well, this wouldn't be a problem at all. You'd rather that Urhobo and Isoko be different than bear the thought that we are unified as brothers? Well, its alright. |

I beg to differ on your analysis that the ISOKO ETHNIC LANGUANGE broke out of URHOBO. I think the reverse is the case here. please confirm your historical source very well. because most of the urhobo clans/groups actually migrated from isoko land. eg. okpe, effurun, uvwie, udu e.t.c. it is only olomoro that migrated from olomu. so isoko cannot be a brake away language group from urhobo. Isoko language has always being an entity of its own. It is when the urhobos want to manipulate the isokos that they will say URHOBO - ISOKO OWVUO OWVUO. #PROUDLY ISOKO# ISOKO WA DOOOOOOOO 3 Likes |

IceDude: Ukwuani is culturally NOT Igboid bro. However, if I am to be honest from my own perspective, it is linguistically Igboid like the Aniocha or Ika but to a lesser degree. Ukwuani cannot be called Igbo just like the Ikwerres are advocating. However, it has Igboid roots as a linguistic entity. If I am wrong, which of course everyone can be, please do well to state your claims. No researcher is 100% perfect! I do my best. |

kpezi: Never said they broke out. One thing we Urhobo/Isoko dont understand is this: URHOBO itself is not a language per se but a cultural marker for a group of related tribes such as Okpe, Uvwie, Isoko, Udu, Agbon, etc. These people all trace their roots back to Benin and somehow, the term URHOBO has been accepted by all of them except ISOKO! Urhobo is NOT a LANGUAGE in the true sense but a CULTURAL INDICATOR. It is only being proposed as a language in contemporary times because of the upspring of schools, colleges of education and universities that study it and even the adopted general Urhobo is easily understood by Isokos. Isoko, like Okpe, is one of the ORIGINAL groups that make up URHOBO CULTURE. However, they have asserted themselves as being different. Not dwelling on that, we both cannot deny that the cultural tie between all URHOBOID groups has made our language similar. Hence when I say Urhobo language, I mean the collaboration of all URHOBOID linguistic entities of which ISOKO is a strong member of whether we agree to it or not! I also indicated the clause to Isoko's inclusion in my article. I believe all is within place. We are ONE! My "Oghene" or "Ekpo" or "Emu" or "Otor" is no less or no more than yours. 3 Likes |

fratermathy: Why didn't you say Urhobo is lingustically tied to Isoko? The Uvwies migrated from Erowha. You do not know this history, so don't distort it. Isoko migrated from Benin just like the Urhobos, they even arrived first. |
