As IG Redeploys Area Commander

Chiemelie Ezeobi

Over 48 hours after the 50-man armed robbery gang stormed FESTAC and robbed two banks in gestapo style, the police in Lagos Thursday said their appeal for help to the Nigerian Navy (NN) and Nigerian Air Force (NAF) did not yield results.

Speaking on anonymity, senior police officers told THISDAY that they had radioed first for help from the Navy in Lagos, when the armed robbers struck that morning, but got no favourable response.

According to the sources, the navy had told them (the police), that even their smallest vessel cannot access the canal since it's too shallow, adding that they should seek help from the Air Force.

Similarly, the police had allegedly sought for the air power of the Airforce to assist in pursuing the suspects as they made their getaway through the canal.

The senior police officers also claimed that the Air Force had not outrightly rejected to help, rather they were told to contact NAF headquarters for clearance.

When contacted, the Director Navy Information (DINFO), Commodore Aliyu Kabiru, said "The NN is constitutionally responsible in defending the nation's territorial intergrity by sea. Thus, the Navy operates in the open seas.

What about the marine police. They xhould have deployed the marine police instead of seeking outside help and now apportioning blame

Thank you, that is what I wanted to say. NPF has a hanger in the Local airport and they do have choppers but the big question is do they have pilots trained in combat flight or air reconnaissance or whatever.

Nigeria Police has budget for its Marine Police and Air services but the corruption there doesn't allow them to do any meaningful thing with it.

The Navy and Airforce are not to blame because there needs to be clearance from hqtrs to avoid stories that touch later

@op the army, navy or airforce is not a 911 emergency force, due authorization usually comes from headquarters and in any case is the police saying they cannot handle a simple case of armed robbery which is their constitutional task, what a shame.

Unfortunately it is not laughable... cry

As Fashola opined, we can't continue with Federal policing, it will not help us...

The military should have helped before thinking of clearance.

They know we have a peculiar situation in this country, our police force skill does not go beyond settling neighbourhood disputes & petty stealing...

They should have assisted.
