Foreign Airlines Crew Skip Nights In Nigeria - Is it That Bad by blacksta(m): 5:11pm On Apr 29, 2009
Several reasons have been raised as to why some foreign airlines do not allow their crew to pass the night in Nigeria.

Some of the reasons include security and economy.

But local aviators have observed that the development portends great danger to the nation's economy.

A top official of Lufthansa Airlines disclosed that security reasons made the carrier to always move its crew from Nigeria to Ghana anytime it arrived the country.

Before now, the source said that the crew of the German carrier were always escorted by heavily armed police to their hotel in Lagos where they would pass the night.

For fear that the unexpected could happen someday, he said that the management of the airline decided to arrange for the crew to start passing the night in Ghana.

Consequently, he said, the airline decided to reschedule its operations in such a way that after disembarking its Nigerian passengers in Abuja and Lagos, its flights move to Ghana as final destination where the crew would then pass the night.

Currently, Lufthansa operates daily flights between Frankfurt and Lagos and thrice to Abuja from its hub in Germany.

The spokesperson for Lufthansa in Nigeria, Mr. Kayode Olaniyan, confirmed that the crew had stopped passing the night in Nigeria but declined further comments on why the airline took the decision.

Why is it that Nigerians never see anything wrong with Nigeria? This is country is clearly not safe enough for Lufthansa and they have spoken by keeping their crew in Ghana.

This represents an economic loss to Nigeria and also a hit to our reputation. How can you say that Nigeria is safe when most of my friends who are private citizens have to travel around with security most of the time.

We should come off our delusion that Nigeria is safe or "Giant of Africa". Size is only meaningful if it used to an advantage. Nigeria has clearly not made good use of its size.

Twenty years ago, it would have been impossible for any foreign airline to contemplate Lufthansa's current move. Nigeria is retrogressing.

Retrogressing @ an Alarming rate,

what's jazzsoul talking about? That Lagos is not safe enough to spend a night is just ridiculous. Do you have any idea how many tourists and foreign expatriates roam lagos' beaches, and cycle along the highways? It's complete paranoia to think that your crew cannot sleep over at a hotel near the airport in any city- accra or baghdad. I doubt the integrity of that news article. If it's true, then the airline is indeed stupid.
Re: Foreign Airlines Crew Skip Nights In Nigeria - Is it That Bad by Nobody: 9:51pm On Apr 29, 2009
I dont have to read the article to know the truth.

However, if we are allowed to call a spade, a spade, then its clear that lufthansa is right on this one since security is not provided for these flight crews.
Why would Lufthansa even want to pay hundreds of thousands for security when the crew can sleep well in ghana without paying a dime for security or having the fear of being mugged or kidnapped?

I'm starting to think you all are just playing with sarcasm. Or am I the only person here who has never been mugged in Lagos? What is the likelihood of taking an airport cab to the airport hotel only to have yourself kidnapped and shot? U guys must be either foreigners, or one of those Nigerians lipsrsealed

@Sammy,

I agree with you that the likelihood is small. However, the issue is not really how small the likelihood is but what will follow after that mugging occurs. In Nigeria, NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, happens after ANYBODY is mugged, murdered, raped, etc. That is the real issue. Even the police will tell the victim (if he/she survives) or his/her survivors that "na only God go helep us o, God dey, na only God fit save pesin from all dis Devil pikins dem".

its no skin off my nose as far as i am concerned, and i really cant hold it against them as its their choice, while we nigerians can manoevre our ways round nigeria, and know the black spots e.t.c the same cannot be said of foreigners and if they decide to err on the side of caution then i think its the best for them

Lagos is an EXTREMELY dangerous place to visit ANY TIME, but the likelihood of armed attack on Lagos roads at night is almost as certain as the chances of running into an improvised explosive device on the roads of Bhagdad.

To the "Patriots" who choose to bellow their disapproval of the preventive measures taken by foreign airlines who now forbid their flight crews from entering Lagos, a few night trips on the roads around Lagos airport will expose them to the risks they choose to deny from the safety of their computer desks, whereopun they can return here to say how sorry they are for understating the perils of Lagos after sunset, IF they are alive to describe the experience awaiting them out there.

The airport is also frequented by armed robbers who would be delighted to hear that air-crews lodge there overnight.

Lufthansa must have chosen ghana over lagos giving that in ghana; their crew can go about their businesses; be it clubbing, shopping and sight seeing in and outside their hotel rooms. That may not be possible in lagos.

Not even sure Lufthansa feels anywhere in lagos is safe for her staff.

To the people claiming Nigeria is safe:

Will you pay the ransom if Lufthansa employees get kidnapped?
Even Lagos that claims it is free from the foreign nationals kidnapping syndrome experienced a thwarted kidnapping scam some time ago.

Security in Nigeria is only assured by providence.
The bottom line is that we need to get our acts together as a country; the handwriting is bold on the wall now.
Re: Foreign Airlines Crew Skip Nights In Nigeria - Is it That Bad by strangleyo: 7:49pm On May 03, 2009
If we don't get our act together we'll just become like Haiti.

Useless, and no one will ever set foot in our country, even other west Africans.
