Port Harcourt was founded in 1912 by Frederick Lugard, governor of both the Northern Nigeria Protectorate and the Southern Nigeria Protectorate. Its purpose was to export the coal that geologist Albert Ernest Kitson had discovered in Enugu in 1909. Although the port was built in 1912, it was not until August 1913 that it was called 'Portharcourt' by the colonial authorities in honour of the then British Secretary of State for the colonies, Lewis Vernon Harcourt. The land was originally the farm lands of the Diobu people, an Ikwere clan, and was called "Iguocha". There are several disambiguities to this name particularly by ethnic Igbos who sometimes call it "Igweocha" and in some situations "Ugwu-Ocha". The discovery of Oil greatly increased the economy of the city which expanded to include Oroworukwo, Mkpogua, and Rumuomasi. In the creeks to the south of the original port were the fishing camps and grounds of the Okrika-Ijaw group. Source:Wikipedia 4 Likes |

PH is not igweocha and igweocha is not PH. Ikwerre is not ibo and ibo is not ikwerre. Wikipedia is not a reliable source and a reliable source is not wikipedia. Stop spreading lies that try to distort history. 3 Likes |

It is only in the eastern region that everybody is dividing, every clan that has oil is given another ethnic identity. do these ppl bother that Kaduna is not an Housa land?? are there no minorities in the north?? Leave Eastern region alone!!!!!! as for lagos, It was never a part of western region, its a noman'sland till the zoo collapses |
