Akinwunmi Ambode, governor of Lagos state, has replaced Young Arabamen (pictured handing out an award) as chief executive officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

Chris Olakpe, a retired assistant inspector-general of police, takes over from Arabamen who, like him, served as a commissioner of police in the state.

Habib Aruna, chief press secretary to the governor, confirmed this in a statement issued on Monday, saying the decision was for “improved performance and better relations with the public”.

Aruna said there had been consistent complaints on the situation of traffic on the streets of Lagos.

“Olakpe’s wealth of experience situated him for the new appointment,” the statement read.

“Governor Ambode, it would be recalled, had approved the appointment of a new general manager for the authority, but the decision to appoint a seasoned former AIG as the CEO of LASTMA was further said to have been necessitated owing to the fact that the impetus expected with the previous appointment was not fully actualised due to the docile nature of the headship of the authority.”

A graduate of Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos, Olakpe joined the police in 1982 and has been the commissioner of police of Lagos, Bayelsa and Plateau states.

He was also deputy commandant of the Police Academy, Kano, and commissioner of police of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit, Lagos.

A member of the International Association of Bomb Technicians (IABT) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (ICAP), Olakpe rose to become assistant inspector-general of police before his retirement in 2014.

I knew this poster boy Ambode was going to make someone pay for his gross incompetence to governance.

Well, The LASTMA boss had to pay. Now ambo buys himself some time to avert blames.

LASTMA has remained the shadow of its former self since Fashola's exit.

Lastma was only working because of the money they made from their unsuspecting victims now they can't make such money they have all retired to the normal "govt work".

They should just find a way to motivate their lazy as5, probably an incentive if they can reduce traffic to ALARP nd maintain that for a month they get their bonuses.

traffic is almost getting out of hand but i think the management of LASTMA has improved in the last couple of days now they are stationed at major bus stops doing their jobs rather than arrassing public transporters

cheesy

If you see boss firing subordinate, that is a sign of weakness, more so, if the employee is known to deliver to target.

Ambode should resign, he cannot govern Lagos from the pocket of his master.

I swear, it seems the only thing Ambode knows how to do is sack. if I were his deputy, I'd be bracing my self up against a shocking sack.

Reasons advanced for the 'change' sound cogent.
