Nasarawa Radio Suspends Staff For Recording Re-run Election Fraud by austentero: 7:46am On Nov 05, 2015
A staff of the Nasarawa State-owned radio station,
Christopher Ajegina has been suspended for allegedly
recording a scene of election malpractice during the re-
run election for the Lafia/Obi federal constituency of the
state.
General manager of the station, Alhaji Yusuf Musa who
claimed to be acting on the directive of Governor Umaru
Tanko Al-Makura, had earlier slammed a six-month
suspension without salary on Ajegina with effect from
April 29, 2015, but attempt by the embattle staff to
resume duties after the expiration of the suspension
period was resisted by management of the station.
The suspension letter which was signed by the acting
director, Administration and Supplies of the station,
Rajab Okposhi, was obtained by Nigerian Pilot and read
in part: “This is a gross indiscipline; it is a total
violation of the public service rules and serious
misconduct.
“Consequent upon the above and in line with the public
service rule that the management acted on the directive
of His Excellency the governor of Nasarawa State and
you are suspended for six months without pay or salary,
pending the decision of the governor with effect from
29th April, 2015.”
It was gathered that trouble started for Ajegina when the
Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in the
state cancelled results in some polling units for the
Lafia/Obi federal constituency in the April 2015 general
elections and ordered for re-run, where candidate of the
All Progressives Congress, APC, Musa Dahiru, was
declared winner against his opponent, Dr. Joseph Kigbu
of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, amidst
controversies.
It was learnt that the management of NBS was not
pleased with the suspended staff and accused him of
presenting a video clip of massive rigging and other
forms of malpractices during the election to candidate of
the PDP whose recent victory at the tribunal the
management believe was based on the strong evidence
presented before the tribunal against the APC candidate.
When contacted, Alhaji Musa said he was not ready to
comment on the matter.
“I have the right to suspend any staff that goes contrary
to public service rules and I will not hesitate to
completely dismiss him from service if the matter goes
into the media. No journalist should call me on this
matter again,” he warned our correspondent who
contacted him on telephone.
The National and State Assembly Election Petition
sitting in Lafia, the state capital, had nullified the
election of the APC candidate, Musa Dahiru, and ordered
INEC to withdraw the certificate of return and issue same
to candidate of the PDP, Joseph Kigbu, declaring the re-
run conducted in the said election as illegal, null and
void.
