Looking at the poor living condition and the backward infrastructural shortages in the Uniben halls of residence,a rational student will come to conclusion that “it is better of to stay off campus”instead of going through hell in the Uniben halls of residence.

It is becoming rampant to see newly admitted students selling their bed spaces in the hostel for accomodations in off campuses,which relatively seem a hotel when compared to uniben hostels.

Although the Uniben halls of residence is a discomfort to a person born with a silver or plastic spoon but quite comfortable for rugged boys and girls.

In reality,many things are out of place in the halls of residence in uniben but there seem to be a hidden treasure which makes some watchful students from Ekosodin,Osasogie and PDPA to come and stay in the hostel for some periods of time.


The following are the opportunity cost of staying in off campus as a Uniben student.

(1)GOOD ELECTRICITY SUPPLY


There is a constant electricity supply in the Uniben halls of residence,when compared to hostels in off campuses.For instance,the school authority provides an alternate power supply and makes it a right for students in the school hostels to always have steady power supply between 7pm-2am every day,if PHCN toys with the usual electricity supply.

I suppose the reader knows the importance of electricity?


(2)CONSTANT WATER SUPPLY


There is always a constant availability of water in the school hostels,which means you can easily take your bath,wash your clothes,plates etc on time.In places like Ekosodin,students finds it sometimes difficult to get water but such experiences are not in the diary of students who stay in the halls of residence.


(3)YOU WILL BE INFORMED


Nothing happens within the school with you being ignorant,things don’t catch you unaware.When emergency schedules comes up,students living off campus may not be aware.


As a matter of fact,emergence informations like this have cost a lot of students extra year in school.


(4)READING ETHUSIASISM


In the school hostel,you see your fellow roommates going to night classes to read,even if you don’t have the zeal,you feel encouraged to read,because “Iron sharpens Iron”.


A recent survey shows that out of every 10 best students in a faculty,8 of them are always students who stay in the school hostels,take time to ask yourself why.


(5)MAXIMUM SECURITY


Although God is the author of protection and guidance but you need to help yourself because an old adage says”Heaven helps those who help themselves” so that you don’t be victim of other people’s mistakes or grievances.

Everyone knows that off campus is not safe because you may be easily robbed or molested, unlike within the school premises where two fighting is extremely prohibited and may attract suspension from the university authorities.

You may want to say,after all,”i will not get into trouble”but have forgotten that trouble may run into youeven, when you are as calm as a bottled nut.


Finally i will not deny the fact that uniben halls of residence has its drawbacks and shortcomings but according to economics human make rational choices only when the marginal benefits to be derived is equal to or greater than the marginal cost.


So the ball is in your court,you may do anything you may please with it but i will not advise any 100 level to stay off campus.
