To graduate with 2.1 with CGPA of 4.0-4.49 is not easy. My brother 2.1 get level. The way you are mentioning 2.1 in your post is disrespectful.

I rest my case.

loyalty to lecturers is quite helpful too. Always try to impress them but remember not to outshine them.

OP when will you Understand that First class Degree doesn't guarantee you a First class life? i'm not saying Getting first class isn't good ooo.. But in Nigeria today, it's as good as Nothing. Ppl roam the streets today looking for work everywhere. the economy is bad... even ppl with first class that are lucky enough to get work are loosing the Work daily. I think it's time every Nigerian youth acquire a Skill.. work with your hand... and be Smart with your Work. this first class You are talking about not everyone has the brain for it... some ppl no matter how hard they try can only make do with 2'1... Some have First class brain but couldn't make it due to other reasons...
Exams are not necessarily the true test of intelligence. Life itself is the real exam and only the ones who becomes successful are termed Smart and Brave regardless of the degree. How would you feel having a First class but working for someone with a third class or Second class lower and calling him Boss.?? Students should try as much as possible to get Good grades but shouldn't depend on it cos good grades ain't good life.. (at least not in Nigeria).. get a Skill, enhance your Skill and be Smart @what you do. In no time, you won't have to depend on a Useless Government

In some disciplines such as Law, English, Mass Communication, Political Science, History, etc, subjective marking is employed. If a lecturer says what you wrote is bull crap, then it is! There's no perfect way to tackle questions and issues in these fields. Making a first class, though not impossible, is more arduous a task than in most scientific fields. A 2.1 in these fields is something to be proud of!

My advice is that if you can't make a first, make sure you are at least the best so that people won't ask you why others did what you couldn't.

Most important is a personal relationship with God. I failed a course cos I undergo a surgery during the online phase test n d lec involved was racist. It took the intervention of God to convince the senate to elevate my score to a default 40, yet I got... u know n was ranked second best. So Prayers, Fasting and strong relationship with God.

Once your 100lv is not so good then say goodbye to first class. You must have nothing less than a 4.0 CGPA in your first year or even a 5.0. Although they are some exceptional case of 3.0 making it to first class. You can't have a 2.0 or second class lower in your first year and be hoping for first class, Never! No matter how hard you work, the real work is done in your first year.

And drop all those "Grace of god, Relationship with god" blah blah mentality. Even those who graduate with certificate of attendance have a so called personal relationship with god. Nigeria is 99% religious, everybody must have prayed for first class cheesy.

Op thanks alot for this. . . . . .i an about to start my first year in the univresity of uyo, department of communication art, with a goal of graduating with a first class. . . .i think this tips will help me alot as am going jot it down.

You are wise, Take note of point 6: that seems to be the common factor, the kind of friends you keep would either make or mar you. Point 9: if you are confronted by a challenging situation do not see it as a reason to miss lectures, No 6 kinda friends would be quick to influence you in taking this negative step but do not listen, its better to enter the kingdom with one friend than to have 500 friends and perform poorly, most of the time those 500 friends have backup plans and their lack of commitment to anything worthwhile would only lead to their downfall or if not, they'll selfishly avoid you when things get better for them and you are down in the dirt. So either way, you would be better off without them to begin with. Bless you.

I don't think internship carry grades in Nigerian universities nowadays btw.
I remember my undergraduates days with some measure of awe and the fact that I almost threw away years of hardwork in my 400 because of a semester fling with a girl embarassed
My CGPA after 400 level fell from 4.73 to 4.44. angry And I cried my heart out.
It was the fear of what I was going to tell my father who was expecting a first class that made me read like a mad man in 500 level final year.
And I made a 5.0 in my finals coming out with a resounding first class.

100 level has the lowest percentage.
A candidate with a poor result in 100 level still has a decent chance of making a first. I know people in my engineering faculty who started making first class grades only when they got to 300 level and still came out with first class.
My friend had a 3.3 in his 100 level and still graduated as the best student in his mechanical engineering set with a CGPA of 4.63.
It takes exceptional hardwork to recover like that though.

People like you should be avoided. If you know where First class takes people, you wont type what you just did.
Believe me when CVs are in front of employers, it takes some balls to push aside a 1st class graduate in favour of a 2:1 or 2:2.

Guy, I didn't in any way condemn getting a First Class.. or didn't you read where I said student should strive to make good grades? if you're smart enough you should see the point that i'm trying to pass across which is, don't hustle to depend solely on your result or you want to tell me that i'm wrong too.... Ma dear, like it or not, it's the bitter truth you'll have to swallow. This is Nigeria and this is 2015.... Things have changed.. Open ya eyes.

I can't just help laughing when I came across comments like: Don't socialise or attend Fellowships too much. It's just very funny.
All things being equal, I'll be a first class graduate of Mechanical Engineering in one of the leading Federal Universities of Technology in the country, as I presently boast of a 4.6* CGPA with only my final year semesters to navigate.

I got admitted into the varsity in later part of 2011 and it was unfortunate to listen to those "you can't get a first class from Mechanical Engineering" comments. My secondary school friend, who was once a national winner of the Olympiad Examination in Physics, was among those ilks peddling that rumour. However, I do not blame him much, he couldn't have gotten a better excuse to explain why he had gone from a 298 UTME result and 88% Post UTME result to someone battling with a 3.48 CGPA.

However, I made a very good decision to attend that year's convocation ceremony. During the ceremony, I discovered a pretty lady, not only bagged a first class but led her faculty. More than anything else, I hate not being able to achieve heights already attained by a lady. I took a photograph with her( She now works with Nestle) and that shot has always been inspiring especially during the inevitable academically challenging times.

All I've been doing is:
1. Believing obtaining a First Class is achievable.
2. Putting in the best I can, without piling any pressure on myself to deliver.
3. Enjoying the quest for glory.
4. Maintaining quality relationships by socialising and not being solely focused on academics. In essence, I mean maintaining a stable emotional balance and keeping fit.
5. Believing in the existence of a Supreme Being Who wants the best for me.

I advise you don't focus solely on one dimension of the refining process the academic environment offers. Get trained in professional courses, engage in sports and build your self.

In summary: Just enjoy learning
