There is nothing special about this question. If the interviewer expected anything different from 2 then he or she needs to have his head checked.

You would end up with impractical employees if you pick those who cannot tell you the simple truth. 1 + 1 = 2.

There is a myriad of answers for that question and for him/her to think you would pick her/his harebrained solution is the height of delusion.

logically, in Mathematics, depending on the base system, 1+1 is two calculating in base 10.
On the brighter side, I think 1 + 1 is 1. Every organization need to have employees working towards a common goal, which requires cooperations, innovations, shatring ideas e.t.c. In this context, team work cannot be over- or under-emphasized. Many sticks make a broom. Therefore, 1 + 1 is one!

so if the interviewer had asked what is your name, the response should be the name i bear. Hmm
it's only good everybody is entitled to his/her opinion. But on the contrary this question expects 2 as an answer but i think the interviewer is trying to work on the psyche of the interviewee. Once i asked an sss 3 student to spell hen and he couldn't believe i would ask him something as simple as that in a dictation and he wrote something else but i wanted hen as an answer.
I think that is it but everyone keep thinking it's technical it's a lie. If a company wants to know how you will add value to them they simply come straight or indirectly ask you why should we hire you?

hope u people will write all this answers if u see this questn in maths test or exam. everybody can set a questn and decide what he wants the answer to be. abi bsos na intervw na him make am they get all this plenty answer. i confuse 2

Well, generally speaking I go with the basic mathematical explanation, and then leave it open briefly to other concepts. Educative it is tho.

Or logically, addition of 1 to 1.

So it depends...

I remember when I was in school then, one of my lecturer would say 1+1 is 3 as a management science student. Which mathematical is 2 but the profit added is 1 making it 3.

You should be able to add something given to you as a resource.

Test of IQ! Of course 1+1 is equal to 2, mathematically. But then, they never asked '1+1 is equal to......'. Rather, they asked 'what is 1+1?' The logical answer should be.... 1+1 is an expression of two digits joined by a maths symbol.


I honestly don't get why they ask such questions. But a sane man will give a simple, concise answer........ 2! If he's wrong, he won't be wrong next time he comes across such question in his next interview.

But, if I were to be the one. I'd simply say itts '2'. I'm sure he asked in relation to the guy's discipline, maybe he studied a science course. If I say it is '4', then the interviewer will then ask me to prove how I came about the '4'. Same, if I say '2'.e eryone knows 1+1=2 but can we prove it scientifically?
