If you feel itchy down there, notice some rashes or lumps that keep coming back, have pain urinating, or experience pain during intercourse, you need to go to the hospital to be checked for any of the following STDs:

Did you know that according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Trichomoniasis is the most commonly curable STD? Now you know. This STD is caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis, which has the ability to attach itself to a patient’s cells and can lead to further cell degradation.

The interesting thing about this STD is that not everyone who has it develops symptoms, meaning that someone can live with it for many years without even knowing that he or she has it. In fact, most men hardly develop symptoms, and most only find out they have it when their sexual partners go for treatment.

For those who are not so fortunate as to live without knowing they have it, they develop irritation on the penis, a burning irritation after ejaculation and urination, mild penile discharge, and for women, foul-smelling vaginal discharge.

9. Infectious Mononucleosis

Infectious mononucleosis is a highly infectious disease caused by the EBV (Epstein-Barr virus). People usually refer to this disease as mono for short, and it spreads from one individual to another primarily through the exchange of saliva.

An individual can have this virus in his or her system for four to eight weeks before it can be detected, though most adults who already have EBV antibodies in their systems are immune to further infection.

The symptoms of this disease include sore throat, fever, swollen lymph nodes and fatigue, and it can therefore be easily mistaken for less serious conditions or ailments. EBV is also present in vaginal, penile, and cervical secretions, evidence that it can even be transmitted through sexual intercourse.

Intestinal parasitic infections are a type of STD that are transmitted through faecal matter. Faecal matter is what remains from the food we eat and when it is contaminated by intestinal parasites, it can carry billions of infectious particles that can easily be passed on from one individual to another.

Intestinal parasites can move from one person to another after an infected anus comes into contact with an uninfected individual, which is why it is very important for people to take up protective measures when dealing with the anus.


People whose intestines harbour these dangerous parasites might not exhibit any symptoms, but they can infect their partners who would start to develop nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and vomiting. People often ignore those signs and live as though they do not have an STD.

7. Molluscum Contagiosum

The virus called Molluscum contagiosum can be transmitted from one person to another through sex or through non-sexual means, such as very intimate skin-to-skin contact.


This STD is very common among sexually active people, with doctors detecting hundreds of thousands of new infections every year. Sharing towels and clothing can also lead to someone getting infected with the above virus.


People can live without even knowing that they have this STD though an infected individual can have wart-like growths in the genital areas. Contact with these growths will most likely lead to the transmission of the STD, meaning that condoms will have little to no effect in the prevention of its spread.

6. Cytomegalovirus

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) can very well be the most common STD in the United States and the world, with about four out of every five Americans said to be a carrier of this STD. However, half of all the infected people got the virus through means other than sexual intercourse, and they got it before puberty.


People who have this STD show no signs of it, but in cases where there are signs, they are too mild to cause any alarm. The only time this STD should be of any concern is when the infected individual is pregnant or has a condition that has greatly compromised his or her immune system. In these cases the carrier can experience serious fatigue, muscle aches, diarrhoea, seizures, blindness and it can even land them in a coma.



5. Donovanosis

Donovanosis is caused by klebsiella granulomatis bacillus, and it is an STD that affects an individual’s genital area or mucous membranes, the anus, and the groin.


This disease destroys the skin surrounding the infected area, and it can cause ulcers. Although it is possible for some people to live with this disease without serious side effects, most people suffering from Donovanosis will develop lumps and red sores, and then start to bleed.


The sore that develops from this disease spreads even faster and farther with the help of other bacteria, and it can get very painful. If left untreated it can lead to further complications. This condition can be treated easily with the use of antibiotics

4. Chlamydia

Chlamydia is one of the most common STDs known in the developed countries today, and it can affect both men and women adversely. Chlamydia’s inclusion in this list is because more often than not, people suffering from this STD do not know that they have it, especially when it is in its early stages.


The lack of symptoms early enough leads to people getting re-infected and infecting others without knowing. After a while in the body, Chlamydia can damage a woman’s reproductive system and cause a painful burning sensation in both men and women during urination.

A doctor can easily treat Chlamydia with an antibiotic, though the treatment needs to be administered before serious damage has been caused.

3. Genital Herpes

Herpes simplex type 1 and herpes simplex type 2 are the two viruses that cause genital herpes. You will be surprised to discover that one out of every six people between the ages of 14 and 49 in the United States have this STD, making it one of the most common STDs out there.

An individual can develop small blisters or sores in the genital area or develop itching and pain during urination, but the symptoms generally remain dormant and inactive until triggered. It is possible for people to ignore the above symptoms and assume that the blisters or the pain are nothing to worry about, a situation that can lead them to living with the STD and not knowing about it.

2. Gonorrhoea

Gonorrhoea is an STD caused by bacteria called gonococcus or neisseria gonorrhoeae, and is commonly referred to as “The Clap.” A person suffering from this STD will produce a thick green or yellowish discharge from his or her reproductive organs; it causes pain during urination, and if left untreated can lead to infertility.


The inclusion on gonorrhoea in this list is due to the fact that a tenth of all infected men and over 50% of all infected women do not show any signs and symptoms of this disease. This means that there are so many people around the world with this STD that have no idea that they are sick.

1. Syphilis

Treponema pallidum is the bacteria that cause syphilis. Syphilis can easily be referred to as one of the worst STDs out there that a pregnant woman can have, because it almost always causes stillbirths or miscarriages, in addition to other serious health problems.


This dangerous STD is on this list because it is very easy to live with for years in its early stages without realizing that you have it. All an individual would see are painless sores in the genital areas or around the mouth that can last well up to six weeks, which then disappear after this period.

The second stage of this disease will also not cause someone to be alarmed because it will appear as the flu, rashes in the genital areas, or patchy hair loss. However, the third stage is where things begin to heat up, and the serious heart conditions, blindness, or paralysis that result are enough to make someone want to die.
