Ibadan needs N4b for new palace, state, says monarch
From Iyabo Lawal, Ibadan guardian 1 jun 09

THE Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana and members of his council are currently shopping for N4 billion to build an ultra-modern palace and also achieve the creation of Ibadan State

Oba Odulana disclosed this while receiving the Chief Executive Officer of Intercontinental Bank Plc, Dr. Erastus Akingbola, at his Monatan home at the weekend.

The monarch described the inability of Ibadan to have a befitting palace almost 150 years ago as pathetic, saying the building of a befitting edifice to house Ibadan monarch is top on his agenda.

Oba Odulana recalled that other old capitals of the then northern and eastern regions were now autonomous, leaving Ibadan the only city that has suffered neglect under previous administrations in the area of states creation.

Appealing to Akingbola to support the two projects, Oba Odulana said: "Ibadan has no palace since 150 years ago. The town remains the same since the colonial days through the Western Region era. I am appealing to people like you in the private sector to come and support us on these projects. We need N4 billion to achieve both".

Earlier, Akingbola lauded the monarch for the peace the city has been witnessing during his tenure, stressing that the bank planned to build more branches in Ibadan because the current branches are making profits in the city.

He said: "We came to thank you particularly because your tenure has witnessed peace which makes Ibadan a conducive environment for business. Ibadan is peaceful and we run a profitable business here. This city can support 50 branches and we are going to open more branches here by God's grace."

The bank boss disclosed that his bank contributes to the local economy by employing local staff rather than bringing staff outside the cities where it operates. By opening more branches, he acknowledged that more local residents will be employed by the bank.

haha the even want ibadan state

ibadan is the largest city in west africa and surely deserves a state. Because of its size ibadan can easily consume the federal allocation, and when that happens there will be nothing left for the rest of the state.  Have u ever thought of how many primary school and secondary schools in ibadan the state goverment will have to pay all these teachers.

I wonder whether Akingbola does not know 2 words: "Bleep OFF!"

That would have been an appropraite reply.

Bleep off becos of what, Is Akingbola's bank not making money in Ibadan, u want him to bite the hand that feeds his bank. A city of 1.5 Million people if not more, if u are making only N10.00 from every adult in that city u will be a millionaire in no time. A city with 1.5 million in any other economy can do enough civic feat for distinguish members of that society.

The problem with us in Nigeria is we are use to seeing our kings live in sub standard buildings, in the olden days a tax would have been levied on the citzenry of the town to raise the money, market would pay the kings levy b4  they can trade. All those revenue has been taking away from the King and giving to the State and the LG.
Re: #4,000,000,000 For Ibadan Palace!shocking! When No Good Road Dey by KnowAll(m): 9:26pm On Jun 01, 2009
There is a market in Ibadan called oja oba - which literally means the king's market. He collects a levy from every body that trades there every day in the olden days but now I think the LG collect that levy now. Basically the King has lost most of the source of his revenue to corrupt LG Chairmen and women.

I am sorry, but the largest credit for peace in the city should probably be allocated to the Police, State Government and Federal Government.

So why should he be giving some money to some lunatical dreamer that wants to spend N4bn on property?

You somehow think this king is entitled to collect money from people.

Yoruba Kings where proper kings that had power to raise funds and feed themselves. It is this artificial creation called Nigeria that is stopping City states like the Ibadans, Egbas , Ijebus from raising their own revenues. This sole called federal and state goverment after hijacking this city state's revenue they should at least have the decency at least to provide the monarh's of such city states a befitting palace as the case maybe.

How can you u compare a yoruba monarch with some little council in England or Saddam a man that stole power by the barrel of a gun. The equivalent of Yoruba monarch in the west is the Queen of England. The Queen of England does not live in some shit run down palace. You need to and read more about the yoruba city states of the 18th century. The only thing going for the Queen of England is she has never been defeated in battle that is the reason why she still have all her opulence intact.

I will tell u a little history about the Yorubas

1. They are the most civilised balck race on earth. If only they built boats like the british they would have conquared the world.

2. They are one of the few black races that wore clothes - aso oke, there are so many tribes that dont wear cloths working naked all over the place.
There are some that tie wrapper has cloth they know themselves.

3.They eat proper food, there are some tribes that eat people u will not catch any yoruba do that.

4. They are the only black race that after 400 years of slavery their customs and traditions still survive in brazil, cuba, southern Southern USA around sea island of the coast of America. You cannot beat that - that is culture and every yoruba man must be proud of it.

For mordern Nigeria to reduce our monarch to a pitable begger is a slap to every youba person.

The OONI of IFE has not built palace with N4billion Naira, so I wonder what OLUBADAN is thinking.

The OLUBADAN might as well ask the federal goverment to bring Central bank to his palace so that they can mint currency there.

For the record, OLUBADAN don't even have no crown among the Yoruba OBAS, it was a glorified BAALE turn to OBA because of the sheer size of IBADAN.

Why did he not said this when ADEDIBU was alive, he would have gotten the sack because he ADEDIBU didn't even think of building a house for N1 billion naira grin grin grin

Yu must be in kuku land Ibadan city state stopped the Hausa - Fulani marauders in their tract. The last mordern town that fell to the fulani was Ilorin. You have to remember that old oyo empire extended as far as abuja. But Ibadan stopped the fulani on slaught and all yorubas should be grateful for this great victory. @sagamite, you obviously do not know anything about history.

1. Ibadan people descended from a settlement of Warriors, yet they are the most democratised group of people in Yoruba land.
2. Ibadan people were the ones that actually kicked Hausa-Fulani's ass, all of Yorubas need to thank them for stopping the Hausa-Fulani onslaught.
3. Ibadan people or Yoruba people are not as barbaric as Hausa-Fulanis, hence they do not have the need or willingness to expand to other people's land. Infact if you take time to study your history you would notice that Hausa-Fulanis, used deceit, deception and outright killing to try to gain control of areas in Kwara such as Ilorin.
4. Just like Knowall said, Yorubas in general do not have a colonial mentality hence they don't believe in taking over other people's land. (hence the reason they did not take over Benin Kingdom when they had a chance to do so, instead they just helped Benin people to set up a ruling monarchy system based on  was already functioning in the Yoruba Kingdoms).
5. Yorubas are the ones holding this country together because they have always been reasonable people, Hausa-Fulanis are hopelessly colonialistic, the Ibos are hopelessly independent, hence the day the Yorubas decide  that enough is enough is the day that Nigeria would break up.

You need to read up on your history before uttering unintelligent statements.

@mcrackles

Its unfortunate that some people on this forumn go ahead to post without checking out their facts.

1. This particular Olubadan that you are insulting was one of the few people to openly oppose Obasanjo and the governments for their corruption.
2. This particular Olubadan that you are insulting was one of the few people that openly opposed Adedibu and his thugs for their corruption.
3. This particular Olubadan that you are insulting was one of the few people that had openly supported the common man with their selflessnes.
4. Because of this Olubadan's anti-corruption stance, he has received little financial support from the State government and has thus been running his traditional administration mostly through his own personal riches. Yes he is personally wealthy hence does not need corruption money contrary to ur insinuation.
5. This particular Olubadan was one of the few anti-corruption Kings that we have in Nigeria, hence as a result he is disliked by most corrupt nigerians.
6. Yes Ibadan does not have a palace befitting of its status, hence his request for the construction of a new modern palace.
7. This particular Olubadan has openly sided with oppressed people so much that he has become an enemy of corrupt politician.
8. This particular Olubadan is one of the most principled man that you are probably going to meet in your life. Think of him as a Royal version of Femi Falana. Yes he is an activist King.
11. This particular Olubadan is personally rich himself before becoming the King, hence has been sustaining himself mostly with his own financial resources because his political and moral stance means that the Oyo State Governor opposes him and does not support him like they do to most other Kings.
10. This particular Olubadan is one of the most educated people you are probably going to meet amongst Kings in nigeria. You need to actually read his biography and personal history for you to understand that he's not only well-educated but also has achieved a lot of personal things in his life. Reading his personal history would make you realise that he is an accomplished person by his own right, hence u need to stop running your mouth against him.

-------------------------------------------------------------

@others

It would do a lot of people some form of good to properly research matters before opening their mouth to utter words on topics they know next to nothing about.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Yes Ibadan does not have a palace befitting of its status, hence his request for the construction of a new modern palace. Infact the issue about a New Palace in Ibadan was not started by this particular Ibadan King, it has been ongoing for at least 10years now.
The planning phase for this issue as reached a phase in which a particular piece of Land is said to be have been set aside for the construction of this palace. Hence people should please look, analyse check facts before opening their mouth.
