COMMUNIQUE ISSUED BY 14 POLITICAL PARTIES THAT CONTESTED THE DECEMBER 5TH,2015 GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION IN BAYELSA STATE
We the undersigned 14 political parties that contested the December 5th,2015 Governorship Election in Bayelsa state,Arising from a meeting at the SDP State Office in Yenagoa on Tuesday,8th December 2015 have extensively and exhaustively deliberated on the incidents that occurred before, during and after the elections and noted as follows:-
1.That the Governorship election in Bayelsa State was generally peaceful and conducted in accordance with the rules and regulations as stipulated by INEC and the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).
2.That the elections in Sagbama,Ekeremor,Ogbia,Kolokuma/Opokuma,Yenagoa and Nembe were relatively very peaceful, fair and credible.
3.That initial skirmishes reported in Nembe and Ekeremor Local Government Areas were brought under control after the intervention of the security agencies,to allow for the conduct of the exercise.
4.That very massive and monumental fraud, rigging, outright stealing of electoral materials and open attempt to overrun the INEC office by militants, thugsand agents of a particular political party in Oporoma and Amassoma were reported. We are aware that some military personnel colluded with militants and criminal elements loyal to a particular party to snatch electoral materials, thereby compromising the entire electoral process. We also aware that some youth Corp members were held hostage in some areas and forced to make entry in favour of a particular party.RESOLUTIONS Having collated the reports from our units and LGAAgents, reports from NGO's,INEC Officials,Localand International Observers and various security agencies,we have resolved as follows:
1.That we strongly condemn the situation where materials were distributed late in the afternoon, accreditation done in the evening and voting done in the night in Southern Ijaw Local Government Areawhich out rightly negates all democratic norms.
2.That we condemn and vehemently oppose the use of thugs, militantsand military personnel and any other means to intimidate, oppress, hijack and steal INEC electoral materials for the purpose of election.
3.That we however, commendthe people of Southern Ijaw for standing to firm to stop the militants, military personnel and thugs from carting away INEC materials from INEC office at Oporoma,Amassoma and other communities.
4.We totally condemn in strong terms the electoral fraud that characterized the exercise in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, were INEC personnel and materials were hijacked by hoodlums, through the instrumentalityof the security operatives to harass, intimateand dehumanizes electorates, ouragents and party members.
5.That we will resist any attempt by any political party, group and/or agency to manipulate, hijack and /or intimate the electorates, partly agents and INEC from exercising their franchise or carrying outtheir legitimate functions during the rescheduled election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
6.That we urge INEC to be unbiased, neutral, transparent and provide a level playing ground for all parties in the rescheduled election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area in a free, fair and democratic manner.
7.That all contestants should respect and accept the decision of the electorates in the election held so far in the 7 Local Government Areas and the people's decision in the Southern Ijaw rescheduled elections when INEC eventually gives us a date.
8.That we strongly dissociative ourselves from any candidate, groupor political party, agency etc, threateningthe leadership of INEC in the course of carrying out their lawful duty towards free, fair and credible elections in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
9.That we re-affirm our commitment to the peace accord signed amongst the political parties, candidates and INEC to maintain the peace before, during and and after the elections.
10.That we commend all Bayelsans for their-peaceful disposition despite the security challenges during the elections.
11.That we strongly commend the people of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area for standing firm to protest against the flagrant perpetration ofinjustice and open abuse and denial of their fundamental rights to vote during the election and urged them to be strong and firm under the cover of the rule of law and security protection to vote during the rescheduled elections.Communique read by the chairman Independent Democrat (ID),Prince Elemah and jointly signed by chairmen of 14 undersigned political parties.
