Adesemowo Tolu

Otunba Gbenga Daniel was months ago appointed the chairman board of governing council of the Federal University of Technology, Gombe.

The appointment appears to OGD’s supporters as a welcome development, they consider it as a reward for the excellent services OGD rendered to the party in the last 15 years.

On a personal ground, I consider this appointment shameful. We are talking about a man who is currently the longest serving PDP governor in the southwest, a once dreaded lion of Judah…I mean lion of the southwest. There are other juicy appointments out there, what I do not understand is why this very one?

FACTORS THAT MIGHT BE RESPONSIBLE.

OGD inconsistency is one factor I consider might be working against him. OGD made a great mistake opting out of the PDP alongside his supporters for the PPN in 2011. The PPN performed woefully in the general elections held in 2011, coming a distant third behind the eventual winner, Amosun and little known Olurin of the PDP. The result of the 2011 general elections must have exposed OGD political weakness and the total collapse of his political empire. The self acclaimed lion of the southwest politics, in his desperate bid to regain his lost political relevance, also moved his machinery to the labour party. One thing led to another and the embattled former governor was on the move again, this time around he returned back to eat his vomit as he declared for the Peoples Democratic Party again.

On arrival in the Peoples Democratic Party, OGD unfortunately found it difficult to penetrate. Prince Buruji Kashamu, who is now a senator elect, was fully in charge of the day to day running of the party affairs. Former president Goodluck Jonathan hardly takes a decision in the southwest without consulting with Buruji.

OGD lost out in the PDP senatorial primary election to Prince Buruji Kashamu, this development further exposed the self acclaimed Lion of the southwest as a political weakling. Prince Kashamu faction completely swept aside any form of Opposition from the OGD camp.

What could have happened to the once dreaded lion of the west? What could have been responsible for the downfall of OGD? These and many other questions are being asked.

Just like I said earlier, OGD inconsistency played a major role in his downfall. The idea of decamping to the PPN and later the Labour Party was a wrong move. His politics of convenience and betrayal gives him away as a man without principles, loyalty and character. Like they say, a man who can not stand for something will fall for anything. Political leadership requires men that can swim and sink with a political philosophy and not the fair weather politicians.

A living dog is better than a dead lion. What else can OGD bring to the table in this new political dispensation with a crumbled and scrapped political machinery? His likes belong to the yesteryears. His best days in politics are without a doubt behind him. It is obvious the lion is now a political minnow without a streak of any fear factor. The jungle no longer belongs to the lion.

Daniel appointment as the chairman of the governing council of one of the federal universities by the the former president Goodluck Jonathan, further confirmed his irrelevance on the political scene. He has been pushed into an arena where his voice can hardly be heard. His voice hasn’t brought any electoral fortune anyway and there isn’t any need for more. Let us hope that in intermingling with the academics, OGD can learn how to stand firm on a sound moral and political philosophy without gallivanting and crisscrossing the political space without any moral code.

It is obvious and clearly written on the wall that the lion is tired. “Erin ti subu ko le dide”.

My position was not a fight against those who
have chosen to join the progressive mindset, but
against tyranny called Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD).”
“OGD as an institution he claimed to be has lost all
traits of democratic ethos and pursues personal
agenda rather than our collective aspiration.
“He is known to destroy political foundations of
individual and groups as evidence of his destruction
and destabilization of PDP in 2011. Whatever he is
today was made by PDP who gave him the lifeline in
2003 to become governor, but he later chopped off
all fingers that fed him, including former President
Olusegun Obasanjo.”
LP recalled that it put Gbenga Daniel on probation
for one year, starting from December 2012 to
December 2013, adding that “but because of the trait
of the mischief and callousness he had demonstrated
so far and at certain times during his probation
period, we told him to formerly resign his
membership of PDP.
I can authoritatively tell you that Daniel was no longer
popular, the formal governor lost his polling unit,
ward, local government, federal constituency,
senatorial and the state, during the 2011 elections while he was still in power. I now wonder, what magic he wants to display to
win any election in our dear state, Ogun State.
