The Watergate scandal. US President Richard Nixon (a republican) sent people (mainly former FBI agents) to break into the Democratic National Committee Headquarters at the Watergate Complex in Washington in 1972. They were caught by the police, but the President tried to cover up the affair (using the FBI and CIA). Two New York Times journalists and an informant within the government ( "Deep Throat" ) eventually exposed the affair and the president had to resign
