Five Permanent Secretaries arrested in connection with N2.985bn fraud in Niger State have admitted to committing the offence THISDAY has learnt.

The Permanent Secretaries were arrested last week and detained on the orders of the Special Task force on the recovery of stolen public funds set up by the Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello.

A very reliable source close to the Task force also said the affected permanent secretaries have reached an understanding with the panel on how they would refund the stolen funds.

However, they were said to have named other public officers, serving and retired, that benefited from the fraud asking the task force to go after them to collect the portion of the money that accrued to them.

It was learnt that since they owned up to the offence, they were granted bail on Tuesday, to ‘enable them go and look for the money and pay back to the government.

THISDAY further learnt that the affected officers said they were not in position to fish out two other suspects connected to the crime ‘since we are not policemen’.

“The two other suspects have been on the run since the five permanent secretaries were arrested and efforts to apprehend them has not been successful, we will continue to go after them until they are arrested,” the source confided in THISDAY.

Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elikana, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), last week confirmed the arrest of the officers to THISDAY, saying that their arrest was due to the diversion of contract money to personal loans, adding that their arrest was also on the orders of the Special Task Force set up by government.

Though Elikana said the Police was not involved in the investigation, it was learnt that all the security operatives in the state working together on the matter.
