From the comments so far posted, you'll see Nigerians (and indeed Africans) have "depleted" self esteem, just see how nairalanders have come to portray the practice as barbaric, evil and backward and then dissociates themselves from it just because it's being practiced in Africa(I'm not approving of the practice neither). I bet if male genital circumcision is being practiced in Africa, my brothers and sisters would have distanced themselves from the practice just to please their non-African audiences. |

cococandy: I know she is lying because the said father in law is unnamed; the community is also unnamed. Despite what is may seem to the outside world, Nigeria is no longer in the stone ages. If she is emancipated enough to seek asylum in a country like Canada and seek the services of a lawyer then she is emancipated enough that the in laws cannot impose their will on her. However, I must say that I agree with you on the issue of sensitisation. deliveryboy: Male genital circumcision is practiced in Africa and indeed in Nigeria. We have not distanced ourselves from it nor made laws against it. This is likely because we know its benefits and found a basis for it in the bible. Please do not give the impression that nairalanders are mindless simply because we have said no to fgm and you feel the reason is because that idea comes from the west. We as nairalanders and Nigerians have weighed the pros and cons in the light of knowledge and decided not to stand for it. We have examined the rationale for the practice and found it wanting. The clitoris enhances the pleasure derived during sex for women and we have seen no reason for clipping it merely because some men feel that sex should be enjoyed only by men while women just endure it. Or that women become promiscous simply because it is not clipped or chopped off. We have proved that as a nation we do not mindlessly follow the dictates of the west by prohibiting same sex relationships. Please give us some respect. |

vRendoh:not on innocent infants. If a woman wants to toy with her vagina it's her discretion but how you get to abuse infants in the name of tradition is sickening 1 Like 1 Share |

jascon1: Sir, All what you wrote about rape and no conviction is those who do not know their rights. If you have a good lawyer, you can win a case like this. If the police are siding with the father in law, they are not the only division in Nigeria, You can write a petition to the commissioner. Sir, i advice you know your rights and don;t let anyone intimidate you in the name of culture. So many cultural stuffs worse than this i have seen and cleared away with the law. The constitution of the Federal Republic is not following your culture. Nigeria is a secular state. Your culture says molest and torture a child almost to death, sit down and kill your child then. Don;t make a move. This story is fake! What about Child Rights Act? Mr, wake up. As bad as Nigeria is, i know there is a law when you want the law to take its course. Note the emboldened . |

In as much as i find your comment optimistic, I would be delighted to wake you up to the realities of life. According to you, you know your right while she doesn't, You can write a petition while she isn't as educated as you're to write one, you can find a good lawyer while she didn't believe she could, you have saved enough cash for legal proceedings while she hasn't. You're not the only person who knows his right, but of what use is knowledge without practice? No matter how good you try to paint the picture, deep within yourself you know that Nigeria hasn't achieved that advanced judicial system to offer transparent legal services to her populace. FGM is a rooted culture that will take more than the police or lawyers to dissipate. Is good to fight for your right, but don't be too sure of yourself yet. Many have gone n nothing changed coolsix: |
