Jesus was quoting the Psalms 22:1 (a Messianic Psalm which spoke of Him).

To fully appreciate this you must understand the significance of the crucifixion. Quoting 2 Corinthians 5:21 "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him"

Since God could not behold sin, he turned his face away from him. During that period, the wrath of God was placed on him for the sins of the world and hence great darkness covered the face of the earth. The pain of separation was great and Jesus (the LOGOS of God) cried out in anguish!
