the black vertical line is called 'linea nigra'. it is actually there but it shows fully when a woman is pregnant. because it is so light in colour one may not notice it. Prior to pregnancy the light or pale line is called the linea alba (white line).  It runs from your navel to the pubic bone.  It darkens during pregnancy acquiring the name linea nigra (black line).

It's always been there even before pregnancy, but because there's an increase in the skin-darkening melanin during pregnancy it becomes more pronounced especially if a woman is dark skinned.

It goes off after delivery.
