9 Reasons Why Nigerian Universities Are Better Than Polytechnics by EduRegard: 9:53pm On Feb 24, 2016 |
The difference between a university and a polytechnic is widely known, likewise the difference between BSc and HND. Even though it is believed that everyone has a chance to be successful no matter what you do or the level of education you could attain, but there are some facts that should be emphasized, not for criticism or hate, but for us all to get educated in some ways. So right here are some 9 Reasons Why University BSc Is Better Than Polytechnic HND 1 Quality of Lecturers – You cannot just compare the experience and expertise of lecturers they have in a university setting to that of the polytechnic. Most university lecturers are professors and PhD holders with years of teaching coupled with experience to show for it. In fact, most Master degree holders in some universities are mere assistant lecturers. This is not so for our polytechnics where most of their so-called ‘experienced’ lecturers are mere BSc holders who are university graduates. Most rectors of polytechnics are Msc holders, though not all, only a few are PhD holders. At times, even corps members lecture in some polytechnics. 2 Qualification For Entrance – The qualification for entrance into the university is more strict compared to that of polytechnics. Obviously, JAMB UTME cut off for universities is somewhat high, at times, this leads to frustration of jambites, which makes them resort to polytechnics. 3 Funding From Government – Nigerian Universities are much more funded by government than polytechnics. Funding is one of the ways to determine the quality of an institution. If you notice, the government and the media in general pay more attention to the demand of ASUU over ASUP. Though, some universities might decide to play narrow with the funds. That is why products of universities are always trained better than those of polytechnics. 4 Research Work – Universities are the foundation of researches and this is the root of progress in institutions. Even though the quality of research work in Nigerian universities is poor, it is still far better compared to that of polytechnics that do very negligible or feeble research works. 5 Beautiful And Large Campus Environment – Mere structures and architectures of buildings in an institution goes a long way in telling about the quality of such institution. Taking OAU as an instance, whether OAU is still the most beautiful campus in Africa or not is an argument meant for another day. But No polytechnic in Nigeria can even compete with the institution in terms of structures and its landmass. 6 Quality of students – It's a no-brainier that the most brilliant students go to universities. In most polytechnics, all you see is dejected and old students who have taken JAMB UTME more than a couple times but no luck, then resorted to such institution. Just few of polytechnic students are young and smart, no hate. Free Scholarships Past Questions 7 Scholarships Preference - Reputable scholarship bodies hardly notice polytechnic students when it comes to scholarship offering. Only university undergraduates would have the opportunity to apply for such scholarships. Not only at the undergraduate level but also postgraduate scholarships. Meaning, there i hardly scholarships for polytechnic students. This is another form of discrimination in some sense. 8 Market Demand – Market preference for BSc is far higher than for OND/HND. OND/HND holders are most times seen as middle level manpower though that was the intention when polytechnics were initially created. There are more opportunities for BSc holders even outside the country and world wide. 9 Self Esteem – An average BSc holder tends to have more confidence and self-belief than a HND holder. This is however not the fault of HND holders, they only have to face stiff discrimination in the employment market, thus having a negative impact on their self esteem. DISCLAIMER : This post is not in any way meant to impress, oppress or make anyone feel depressed. It is just a mere observation from an average human being who is subject to flaws and bound to write whatsoever words that form from the letters he probably randomly typed. No matter the certificate, the sky is not the limit. SOURCE : http://eduregard.com.ng/reasons-why-university-bsc-is-better-than-polytechnic-hnd/ 25 Likes 6 Shares |

***** HND holders are the engine room of a nation like Nigeria.... But when you see a gradute of Animal Science working as a marketer in GTB then my brother it's by connection and grace. Not by grades and institutions 24 Likes 1 Share |

DankemzI:Obviously, your choice of course or institution faintly matters in a country like Nigeria. You only need an uncle that knows a friend that knows a man working under the brother of a big company. But it shouldn't be ruled out, the better your institution , the higher and easier your chances become. 2 Likes |

Unfortunately, this OP is wrong, there are so many advantages in polytechnics. Poly students have more practicals than universities and also we spend less time in school and have more to focus on life in general. U just dey talk rubbish 16 Likes |

okay you're making me feel bad, I choose a polytechnic as first choice.... base on my financial status... but I could still do a DE when the money comes. Your points are quit strong nevertheless, people would still go to a polytechnic. 13 Likes |

EduRegard: Fine ***** Polytechnic graduates are like foreign graduates... You want someone that thinks out of the box? You want a computer science student that graduated with 5.0 but can not format a system? Nigerian Universities teach only theory, we heard about Unical students standing under the sun for practicals some days back ***** Polytechnic is practicals back to back, prove me wrong 28 Likes 1 Share |

Affable0709: Don't feel Bad.. At all follow your heart not what people say, polytechnics allow cash trapped students oppurtunity of hustling. Later you can complete your HND when you're financially bouyant enough. Tell me what a B.sc holder can do, that an H.nd holder can not do. If not better than. I studied a social science course (Pol. Science) which polytechnics doesn't offer. The truth of the matter is that while Nigerian universities are good in terms of theory, Nigerian polytechnics are better in practical terms. Disbelieve at ur own peril, you can't compare a Mechanical engineering or computer engineering student of Auchi or Lautech or Abia Poly with that of University of Ibadan, Futo, Futminna, UNN, who's IQ are on par. That of the former will school that of the later in the practical field anytime, any day. The edge, a university student has is his or her ability to educate you on a discipline because of their strong foundation in theory. I graduated from a university so I have a first class knowledge of what m putting forward here. A graduate of public administration from a polytechnic can't stand me, I will reduce him or her to nothing, that's because m well rooted in the discipline as it is theoretically inclined. There are 400l nursing students in universities who can't attend to a patient that needs intensive care but they can make parallel A's. This is my take on this matter! 13 Likes 1 Share |

If you are making this argument, it points more to the failure of our education authorities to differentiate between what is polytechnic and university. This feeling of being better and the discrimination inherent in the system is the reason why students who should have done well in practical oriented nature of polytechnic would want to test their ability in the theoretical nature of Nigerian universities. This form of discrimination ought not to be assuming the authorities had made sure the requirements for each institution had been taken into consideration in the day to day administrative duties. 1 Like 1 Share |

Poly is better when it comes to practicals. Universities do the theory aspect more While Polytechnics do the practical aspect. Am example is petroleum training institute (PTI) @Warri, Delta state. No good graduate there is jobless because everyone knows the school as superb 2 Likes |
