Canadian Island Offers Refuge To Americans If Trump Gets Elected by Nobody: 4:18pm On Feb 25, 2016

A Canadian island has invited Americans to move there if Donald Trump wins the presidency.

"Hi Americans! Donald Trump may become the President of your country! If that happens, and you decide to get the hell out of there, might I suggest moving to Cape Breton Island!" says a web site that links to the Destination Cape Breton association.

The site juxtaposes the island's Canadian health care system and "affordable" housing market against Trump's right-wing policies.

"Don't wait until Donald Trump is elected president to find somewhere else to live!" says the site. "Start now, that way, on election day, you just hop on a bus to start your new life in Cape Breton, where women can get abortions, Muslim people can roam freely, and the only 'walls' are holding up the roofs of our extremely affordable houses."

The site also mentions that "health care is free" and "nobody has a handgun!"

Cape Breton acknowledged the infamous cold of Canada's winters. But at the time of this writing, the island was only 2 degrees colder than New York City, Trump's primary residence.

So is anybody actually going to take them up on it? Mary Tulle, CEO of Destination Cape Breton, said the invitation was only put out three days ago, but they've received 50,000 U.S. inquiries on their web site in that time, which exceeds all of the traffic they got from the U.S. last year.

Cape Breton is experiencing a sharp decline in its population, which Tulle blames on shuttered coal mines and steel mills, as well as the appeal of oil industry jobs in Alberta prior to the decline in oil prices.

The population was 101,619 in 2011, in the most recent statistics available from the Canadian Government. That's down 4% since 2006, compared to 6% growth nationwide. Forecasts suggest that the island might have already dipped below the psychologically significant level of 100,000.

But it's hard to deny that the scenery is beautiful in Cape Breton -- Tulle said that even Trump would like it there. Since his mother was from Scotland, he might appreciate the island's Scotch-Irish heritage, she said.

A spokeswoman for the Trump campaign did not immediately return messages from CNNMoney.

Cape Breton is located directly up the East Coast from the U.S., at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Not to worry, he won't get elected.

Oh, I know. But, man, I was floored when I read this a few days back. This election season has been something else grin

I don't believe for a second that he'd actually win the Republican nomination. But, hypothetically, were he to get it and H.Clinton the Democratic nomination, I'm 99% sure my state, among others, would vote Trump even despite general strong public disdain for him. Clinton has been much too scandal-ridden, and unlike Trump, her scandals are judged far more seriously.

I swear it's a strange election season, lots of loonies and clowns on the loose in the GOP especially.‎
Me thinks Trump is looking very likely to be the GOP candidate as much as he's detested even in the parties establishment.
Aren't you in Arizona? That's a red state anyway.

That would be a disaster. Sanders has been running on low steam since the very beginning, and I'm not awfully confident of Clinton's ability to overcome at this point.

Nah, it's a red state alright, but, alas, not Arizona. I think you once told me you've been to Arizona? Well, Cape Breton looks beautiful, but as evidenced by the island's low population problem, that isn't enough to keep anyone anywhere. I'm certainly used to natural beauty myself, and I plan on leaving just as soon as I get my degree. Anyway, I suspect anyone who ends up there will end up leaving just as soon, or they'll have to pay them to live there like we do Alaskans here in the U.S.

I thought Sanders started off on high steam, promising the youths REVOLUTION!!!. Whatever that is....seems like a nice guy anyway.
If the GOP throws up Trump then my money is on a Clinton sweepstake.

Can't remember where you at, but I know you told me a while back.... I hinted then something about Breaking Bad. I've not been anywhere aside from Eastern US. Cape Breton looks like my kinda ideal destination tho' but not usre about living there permanently.‎

Yeah, people say that, but, unfortunately, I don't completely trust that a Trump nomination would necessarily ensure a sweeping win for HC, depending. I'd certainly hope so, tho. I like Sanders the best out of all of 'em, 'personably' speaking, but he's never been a strong candidate and his socialist stance makes the average American very wary of him. The fact that he looks like he's due to drop dead any second now doesn't help.

I remember that. You suggested it was probs a Breaking Bad type city or something, and I replied that it was Breaking Bad w/o the breaking nor the bad grin I hinted. You hit close. Cape Breton looks like a nice place to retire, is what. I reckon the present population probably consists alarmingly of older folk as it is. No young person would want to live in such a secluded place for long and evermore. You'd only but get positively bored, believe me. Btw, I finally saw D.C. Let's just say you were 1000% right.

Y'all got nothing to fear from Trump smiley. His rhetorics won't sell when it comes to a general election. Hillary ain't exactly Miss goodie goodie but she looks the sanest in the field, as for Uncle Bernie the "Socialist" maybe his young followers are hints America in the future might be veering to the left....i doubt it tho.
True I hope he doesn't drop dead with all that energy he's generating.
So you saw DC at last wow, so it fits my description?‎

Funnily enough, among all the Republican candidates, Trump is hardly the one to fear, per se. Ted Cruz cuts a far more terrifying figure, IMO. If he was the one heading the polls, I'd be 1000x more concerned, lol. Perhaps, it could be said that we're becoming more socially tolerant as a nation, but I wouldn't necessarily say we're collectively veering liberal. There's still plenty of pushback, and I don't think the thick pockets of potent conservatism and the as yet surprising presence of American style religiosity will relieve us of itself anytime soon. So, really, one can have an entirely different perspective on where things are headed depending on where they live, etc. Plus, I think many Americans, like myself, tend to be conservative about some issues and liberal about others, so..

In some places, yeah. Among other reasons, we had the excuse of visiting a friend who got an internship there just for a short few days over a weekend a while back. There was def a lot of exciting stuff to do, and I haven't seen my fill of it yet, but there were a few things about it that just.. Idk. It was nice in some ways, but I can see why people decide to live in VA, MD and whatnot, choosing to commute there instead.

Lol. Yh, the Zodiac Killer. It's a running joke. I've actually seen a few people wearing "Ted Cruz is the Zodiac Killer" t-shirts, lolll. He's not a serial killer, of course, just a freak with an incredibly punchable looking face. Between the outrageous stuff he says, and the peculiar "punch-me" look he has to him, I really have no idea how people manage to hold conversations with him without obliging their itchy knuckles. Such restraint.

I have a feeling if there was a lottery with "Sucker Punch Ted Cruz" as the prize you'd buy all the tickets, LoL.
