There is tension in the federal ministry of petroleum resources following the government’s decision to extend the tenure of the permanent secretary, Jamila Shu’ara.

According to the Public Service Rules number 100238, Shu’ara was retired on February 17 after attaining the age of 60. However, the government insisted that she would still be in office for another year.

The Punch reports that on February 15 Shu’ara wrote a letter of retirement addressed to Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita, the acting head of Civil Service of the Federation. She commended the federal government and President Muhammadu Buhari for “the opportunity of a rich employment”.

“I wish to confirm that I am not in any way indebted to the Federal Government of Nigeria as evidenced in the non-indebtedness form duly endorsed by the Federal Housing Loans Board,” she wrote.

But in the letter entitled “Extension of retirement period” Shu’ara was told that her emoluments and other conditions of service would be sustained till February 16, 2017.
