The moment in january 1966, in Aburi Ghana, during the prelude days to the nigeria civil war; The Nigerian delegates (The supreme military council) led by Lieutenant Colonel Yakubu Gowon facing off with the beleaguered then Eastern nigerian contingent led by Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu in peace talks held in Aburu Ghana, at the instance of then Ghana's military head of state, Lieutenant General J.A Ankrah. The dialogue held between the 4th and 5th of January, 1967 and culminated in an accord which was duly accented to by both sides and was dramatised by the sharing of a dish of meal by the two chief protagonists. But few days upon touching down in Nigeria, the federal side reneged on the accord which in triggered the bloodiest civil war ever fought on the face of the earth in terms of human cost and collateral damages. The civil war has since ended, but 46 years down the line, the major ethnic nationalities still engage in bitter sectarian cum tribal clashes of turf and attrition. The latest being the Agatu massacre and most recently, the Lagos Mayhem. Can Nigeria ever be one?
