Poor Power Supply: Doctors Now Perform Surgeries With Phone Lights In UITH by Nobody: 6:25am On Mar 18, 2016 |
The Federal Government had better do something fast about exploiting Nigeria’s coal deposits for power. All the statements that gas is scarce are unnecessary and posing great risks to patients in our best hospitals. Immediate past president of the Association of Resident Doctors, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) branch, Dr. Oyinlola Oluwagbemiga and his successor, Dr. Ade Faponle, 2 days ago lamented that as result of the poor power situation in our country doctors in the hospital now use lamps, torchlight and phone lights to perform surgeries on patients. They talked about a situation where doctors would need to perform a 4-hour operation on a patient and the electricity company would tell them they can only provide power for the next 2 hours. Even the 500KVA generator they have is little comfort,as they spend a whopping N16 million naira for diesel every month. One is tempted to ask: is it because most of the elite can easily treat themselves abroad that stories like this wouldn’t touch their heart? We appeal to the Federal Government to take a closer look at coal. Unlike gas, there is no coal scarcity in Nigeria, so it can be used to improve our power situation. Coal is found in great amounts in Enugu, Delta, Kogi and other states but is mostly lying unused while we complain of scarcity of gas. Current Federal Minister of Power, Babatunde Fashola did a great job with independent power provision when he was governor of Lagos State. He should please think and act outside the box, so that his tenure as minister would never be forgotten. when trying to make a point, people lie to exaggerate the situation. Pure concrete lie. There is no way torch lights and phone can be used during surgical procedure except this is a new low we are in this country, there are other electric using equipments that are definitely to be used during operations |
