Risk Of HIV Transmission In Barbering And Hairdressing Shop. by NigeriaBam: 11:15am On Mar 22, 2016
[b]We have read, watched and heard different people talk about HIV and AIDS so we will assume that to aI large extent we are well informed.
However, We will like to draw attention to one area which in our opinion is not well highlighted.

HIV can be transmitted through 4 key bodily fluids and they are:

» Blood and blood products

» Semen

» Vaginal fluid and

» Breastmilk

The first one which deals with blood simply means that if somebody is infected with HIV, his or her blood becomes infectious. If the person's blood gets into another person through a cut or sore or any form of opening or route then it's possible that person can also be infected.

BARBERING SHOP

There are very decent barbering shops which takes infection control very seriously therefore they do what it takes to ensure that infection is not spread from one client to another.

Unfortunately not many barbering shops can boost of this. Many barbering shops have the sterilizing machine in place which is actually NOT WORKING but they just buy some bulb and fix it in. They put the machine in as if it's being sterilized but it's just enjoying normal light. Some few places where it's even working, due to queue and quest to make more cash, the machine does not stay in the sterilizer for long.

Unfortunately, some shops have only one or two which means the machine does not rest. When the spirit is used around the trimmed areas one feels a burning sensation which is an indication of open wound. So if the blade in the machine is not sterilized it can pose infection problem to the next client. It can also get the barber infected if there is an opening in his or her hands. Always ensure that the barber uses spirit to properly wipe clean the comb and the machine especially the blade before using it on you...EVEN IF ITS FROM THE STERILIZER.

HAIRDRESSING SALON

Similarly there are some salons with all the precautionary measures in place and some don't care...well let us be friendly and say they don't know about any infection control. How about you the client who visit the salon every now and then? Durung washing of the hair involving shampoo and the conditioner, how many hairdressers wear gloves? Lets even skip that part and talk about retouching....some hairstylists or hairdressers(whichever) do not wear GLOVES.

Dealing with such strong chemical can cause irritations on the skin if it get to it. It leaves a burning sensation when the retouching cream gets on the skin and in some cases people develope sores. There are some people who naturally react badly to the application of such creams creating sores on their scalp. Sitting under the dryer is the most annoying part. After developing the sore around the forehead and the rollers are fixed and you sit under the dryer, it produces heat causing more pain. After that, the hairdressers will now take off the rollers and apply cream in between the exposed scalp...

MOST hairdressers DO NOT use GLOVES in doing this. Now the problem is that, if somebody living with HIV comes to that shop, does the washing or retouching and developes SORES...she can infect the hairdresser without her gloves on. If the hairdresser is the one infected, he or she can get the client also infected provided there is an opening.

How well are the rollers, pins and combs STERILIZED? Or they are just washed with ordinary soap and water?

Your life is in your hand. Let us stop taking things for granted. Insist on the right thing.
Enlight and Educate your hairdresser or your barber and save lives.

Note that the infection is NOT limited to only HIV...it can be other infections or skin diseases. You have the right to share the message to educate as many as possible but don't take out the name and contact.
