The last six months has been wonderful on local rice from Ebonyi state. The aroma, the taste...men, i can't bring myself to eat imported rice any longer. All those foreign (embalmed) rice are nothing compare to our local rice. It is just that an average Nigerian have skewed value system that sees anything local as inferior and anything foreign as superior. Igbimo Rice all the way.

It would be a slow process we have to start manufacturing first and we can still have trade agreements with some countries like China and Japan.

Just like GEJ phased out cement importation and raised tarrifs on importation of used cars to encourage our local manufacturing to increase bottom line. He even signed deal with Nissian and Kia to set up plants here. They would employee Nigerians, we will use the cars.
It was going to create thousands if not millions of jobs if you count the side business like car dealerships, mechanics, restaurants feeding the workers etc;

What we need to do :

The real issue is not about whether we grow our own rice. Rather, it is about whether we are competitive. Due to the fact that we are part of the human race, we born with the tendency to behave differently. Therefore, with time, many of us develop preferences. It follows that when it comes to rice, we will have preferences. What we then need to do is to find out the factors that underline those preferences. The next thing is to supply products that lead in the key factors of preferences.
This is where research to find out the factors and development to bread the rice with the best factors come into play. Our unfortunate story is that while the government employees at the various universities of Agriculture and grains research institutions have become professors and rich civil servants, they have failed to deliver any competitive rice into the market. Today, our local rice is uncompetitive. That is the reason it needs proping up. A good product sells itself. Virtually all rice have bran but not all of them can be polished to the same extent. There is therfore a need for both the revamping of these centres and introduction of a means of penalising inefficiency and ineffectiveness. Some lecturers and researchers should be held accountable including being sacked where necessary.

The other thing we can do is to impose a health tax. Any polished rice should attract a tax to reflect the level of health risk posed by its glycaemic index. This is more like tobacco tax. Thanks.

Its equally not healthy. Most imported rice are white rice. It's processed and very high on the Glycemic Index, between 75 - 80. Which means they over work the pancreas. Will put people on the fast lane to hyperglycemia - DIABETES.

While the local rice brands are mostly whole grain, still have their bran intact. They release sugar slowly into the blood stream, most of which are brown or a bit off brown. A good idea on the health front.
My problem with the local rice is the occasionally stones that we find within the grains ..fix this issue and people will flock to local rice ,its taste better than imported rice as well

– Abia governor says importation of rice should be discouraged
– Encourages members of his cabinet to own a farm each
– Tasks President Buhari’s administration to get alternatives for survival

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state has removed foreign rice from his food menu.
The executive governor of Abia state, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu has reportedly boycotted the eating of foreign rice, Eagle Online reports.

The governor, it was gathered, has refused to take foreign rice in the last six months as he has reportedly struck it out of his menu.

His reason is that he wants to demonstrate to everybody worldwide that Nigeria, with her rich agricultural potentials, has the capacity to fend for itself in food production.

He said: “We cannot be blessed with the kind of arable land we have in the North and the fertile rainforest in the South and still be dependent as a country on foreign food.”

The governor informed further that as a way of tackling the prevailing economic challenges caused by the global oil slide, the country must develop a new policy that will not allow importation of foreign foods, rather encourage the cultivation of local foods.

While stressing that this is time for Nigerians to value the richness of our local menu, he advised the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to look for alternative measures of survival in agriculture.

Ikpeazu, who is presently leading an agricultural revolution in the state has ordered all members of his executive council and principal officers to own a farm this year, stating said they must return to land in order to recover its original status as the food haven of Nigeria.

This latest move by the Abia governor is coming after his
Lagos state counterpart recently partnered with Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi state to put an end to the importation of rice and see to the processing and distribution of food between the two states.
The partnership is aimed at bringing about national food sufficiency and food security, as well as creating employment and wealth distribution for the benefit of both states and the nation in general

You are not incorrect. But then, the health risks of white rice far outweighs the inconvenience you mentioned.
That, said, the new Ebonyi rice brand from Abakaliki Is carefully milled to take care of your concern.

Chukzyfcb:
The funy thing is, a plate of Ofada rice and stew cost more than a plate of imported rice & stew.
Despite the fact ofada rice is home grown, yet it costs more. Greed is a hidden cause of Inflation says chukzyfcb.
Actually not greed regarding rice. As a kid visiting grandma in the village, everybody had at least a few acres of rice field. Almost everyone stored rice and eat till next rice season. Feeding off weaver birds was almost full time job when the rice is just milky around June\July. Stubborn birds just fashy scarecrows. Then grasscutter will just cut down large pockets of field overnight, avoiding traps. Heavy wind also decimate some.

You easily loose up to 70% of the rice. But the oversea growers do it intensively, with tractors, high yield species, modern silos, extremely low wastage and some with govt agric subsidy. If you have only about 35% of your rice surviving from only 10 acres in Abakiliki or Ofada, the price will have to go up. At the end, mass produced foreign rice will be a lot cheaper.

That is how American rice drove Ghanaians from local rice production. Just like 9ja and many other countries.

Brown rice is actually more nutritious. Its high in fiber, double the manganese and phosphorus as white
2 ½ times the iron3 times vitamin B3
4 times the vitamin B1
10 times the vitamin B6
Rich in Selenium . Brown rice is just wayyyyy better .

Thanks for the insight on rice production in 9ja. What measures can be put inplace to curb those challenges for local farmers. Because Big farm owners with mechanized strategy wouldn't really worry about some of the challenges you'v mentioned. And still they wouldn't bring down price. Coz in naija once a price of a popular commodity goes up, it barely ever comes down!
