SOCIETY for Reproductive and Family Health (SRFH), on Monday, disclosed that Nigeria’s population now stood at 157million and charged the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria (PPFN), to intensify enlightenment education on family planning.

Director- General of the SRFH, Professor Oladapo Alabi Ladipo, made the disclosure at the commissioning of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Resource Centre, at the complex of the National Assembly.

The centre was established by the House Committee on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) headed by Honourable Saadatu Sani, with assistance from PPFN.

Ladipo, while giving his goodwill message, said Nigeria now has a population figure of 157 million from the 140 million it had in 2006.

According to him, Nigeria has an annual growth rate of five million births with six million pregnancies yearly, even as he warned of the challenges posed by such high growth rate.

Professor Ladipo argued that issues such high maternal mortality, unwanted pregnancies, unemployment, pressure on available resources in hospitals, educational institutions as well environmental degradation, remained part of the challenges of uncontrolled growth in population.

He, therefore, tasked the PPFN to increase its awareness campaign on how and why Nigerians should embrace birth control, just as he noted that birth control was equally in practice in the past through traditional methods by the then forefathers.

Speaking at the commissioning, Speaker ‘Dimeji Bankole, who declared the centre open, noted that the MDGs programmes were targeted at alleviating the plight of the poor in the country.

Truly, 157 million is what I believe the population of Nigeria would be about now.

But really, looking back at the old days, you will realise that more and more people are now having less children in comparison.

Today, you may know a friend or two that are only children to their parents. Back in the day it wasn't so.

If we embark on any further rapid population drop, we will regret it. We will gradually crawl to a population of 2 million, remain static for a while, and then start reducing in number.

China has maintained its population at about 1.3 billion but rather than think of reduction, has recently realized that there is something terribly wrong with the population. Now they are urging people to have more than 1 child, but the thing is that most couples are too old to have a second child. The young ones do not even have enough women to go round as wives due to the abortion of female foetuses during the one child policy which has lasted more than 20 years.

Let's leave our population to gradually stabilize. People are learning the cost of raising a family and both rich and poor are now limiting the number of kids they have.

I don't know how true this story is but I sure like the story. I also support yommyuk on invading the rest of west Africa, not by war but by making sure we are the center of all events by being the most renowned in that hemisphere. We need to begin implementing DNA records beginning with Nigeria and then the rest of west Africa; we need to revise our constitution based on elections in Nigeria, in other to enable west Africans vote anywhere in the region after living there for more than a day after 5yrs on the local and governor's level and more than 8yrs on the presidential level. So anyone in west Africa can move to any other part of west Africa and if possible the east and south of africa but beginning with the west, you can move anywhere within the region and stay for a while and can also alter an election. If you are staying in a country in the region(soon to be states at this rate) and you travel to another place out of the country in less than 5yrs, you will be only able to vote in your previous state. They can always be a better general idea in other to move forward.
All these tribes in naija now will be exposed to a higher level of other tribes intrusion than never before. Is so sad that we are over complaining now talkless of our grandkids future when it will be forward ever, backward never in a higher level. Our duty now is to contribute with sweat, values, inventions, intelligence, history records, and the discipline to move forward because Nigeria will only be a very great and historic state in the choice of other current african countries to the future generations in Africa; Everyone will be trying to identify with their historic proof as to how they were naijas because many naijas will have no choice than to live outside the current Nigeria and not because of povverty or anything like that but because of accomodation and historic preservation sites based on culture and its importance to educational study infact more than other current african countries as a case study in many ways. People can be able to see how the real africans(Nigerians) perservered just like others but because west africans and even other regions in africa will be able to bare claim to the current Nigeria there will be no massive rush to settle in nigeria; It might be an expensive place to live with limited driving restrictions or watever form of transportation they may have.
Don't get too excited in fighting other tribes in the current Nigeria because they will be your most valuable asset when we decide to open up without restrictions to the rest of Africa, we will definately need it compared to the other Africans. We might even be forced to go to war with other places in the disguise of opening up to the rest with our current mixture of tribes making the most population of those dependant on that openess. The current naija tribes will be a reference unto how the future tribes will live in harmony so whatever fight of understanding Nigeria is going through today is definately temporary but should be looked upon with fairness, equality, and evolving around circumstances that might try to alter the fairness and equality.
