The General Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, says Nigeria urgently needs a revolution.

Bakare said it was sheer laziness to blame the global economic downturn for Nigeria’s economic woes, adding that waiting for a rise in crude oil prices before reviving the economy was pointless.

He said this during the 27th anniversary thanksgiving of his church on Sunday in Lagos.

The cleric, who lamented that Nigeria’s destiny was hanging in the balance, said that the revolution must include a radical transformation of values that should transcend politics and change of government.

According to him, since past leaders of the country could not deliver on the promise of a new Nigeria when the global and local economic climates were favourable, it would be wrong to blame the country’s woes on the global economic downturn.

He said, “While appreciating the positive developments in our democratic experience, especially the attempts by past and current governments to eliminate systemic leakages, I shall seek to prove that, by a fair preponderance of the credible evidence, the state of the nation calls for a revolution.

“This is a revolution that transcends politics or policies; a revolution that means far more than any change of government; a revolution that means a radical reformation of values as they impact upon the social, economic and political landscapes of our nation.

“It is a symptom of chronic national laziness to blame the global economic downturn for Nigeria’s economic woes, or to wait expectantly for a rise in crude oil prices in order to sustain our consumptive economic patterns. Our problems are not the result of global economic cycles; our problems are the results of counter-productive national paradigms and self-limiting frameworks of state.”

Bakare listed structural deformation, institutional degradation, constitutional aberrations and governmental incapacitation as ‘fundamental errors’ that needed to be addressed for the country to move forward.

In order to correct the structural deformation, Bakare said the devolution of powers was essential, adding that power must be devolved to the levels of governments that are closest to the people and that can best deliver public goods.

He also called for a new constitution, noting that the 1999 Constitution lacked “virtue and laid the foundation for a culture of political fraudulence.”

Speaking on tensions created by aggrieved groups in the country, Bakare advised Buhari to create a Presidential Commission for National Reconciliation, Reintegration and Restructuring in order create a new national identity for Nigerians.

Other functions of the commission, according to the cleric, should include promoting forgiveness and reconciliation among contentious interest groups in Nigeria and facilitating the creation of an acceptable functional governmental structure for the country.

While praying for President Muhammadu Buhari to leave a legacy of a new Nigeria, Bakare urged Nigerians to support the President.

He added, “In a three-dimensional strategic arrangement, this national rebirth process can go on seamlessly alongside socio-economic development, championed by the economic team of this administration, headed by the Vice-President (Prof. Yemi Osinbajo) as well as a national security and anti-corruption strategy, spearheaded by the President Muhammadu Buhari.

This is the actual truth especially the bolded parts. These are fundamental and foundation issues that are detrimental to the existence and development of Nigeria as an entity and frankly, they have practically nothing to do with high or low oil prices. It has more to do with patriotism, honesty and determination to do right!

Why do some of you secessionists keep deceiving yourselves that the SS wants to leave with the SE?.... This 'by-fire-by-force' attachment keeps getting more and more ridiculous by the day and even the SS keeps getting more and more suspicious of this special love.

Bakare is right about the fact that the government needs to look beyond the oil price woes and focus on other ways to boost the economy vis-a-vis, diversifying the economy. It would be obviously silly for the govt to fold its arms waiting for oil prices to rise before it takes proactive steps in diversification.

This doesn't change the fact that the oil price crash is responsible for the present economic woes. The solution to the problem however lies beyond oil.

If you don't mind me asking, can you explain to me exactly what you mean by SS (South South)?

When you did cardinal points in geography throughout you school years, did you ever come across such nomenclature?

How come Nigerians never mention such acronyms as NN (North North), WW (West West) or EE (East East)?

However, when it comes to the oil region with is clearly located in the SE (according to the world renowned cardinal system), you guys then begin to conjure up such things as South South.

What really is South South?

You ought to be ashamed of yourself and if you indeed attended anytype of school, then you ought to be doubly ashamed of yourself.

diversification can never be fully successful with this present constitution where states troop in to abuja every 29th day of the month for allocation.
diversification will only be visible n feasible if and only if the states r allowed to control their resources, explore, exploit n harness what ever resources they have.
federal govt will only male d policies that will encourage diversification but do they have the resources?
we all know states owns lands in nigeria, federal govt starts n stop at asorock, even kubwa, gwagwalada na community get am, before fed govt can acess their lands they must pay fat money but they cant sell their la ds to themselves.
the first step for diversification is to change d structure of the country.
we keep talking abt france, united state comparing our nation to theirs but we shy away from speaking the truth abt the difference in the system of goverment these countries n nigeria practice.

South South is the same as South Central. Its called the North central.
Cardinal points are not fixed, you can decide what parts to use and what not. E.g the US is mainly divided between the East Coast and the West Coast, there's no North coast.
There's Weste rn Europe, Eastern Europe and Central Europe.

Bro, no need to get emotional about this, there's no need to go into the semantics of the meaning or origins of the word 'south-south.' It may make no sense according to your elementary geography but then, remember it's also political, hence it's called a 'Geo-Political' zone. The last time I checked, the people from this 'mystery' zone are happy with this classification and I believe they have a right to maintain their own identity.

Without any further arguments on semantics, I'm sure you now understand what I mean when I use the word SS?.... Most of the people from this region who have voiced their opinions about the disintegration idea have clearly stated that even if they were to leave Nigeria, they would rather be on their own republic than join in Biafra. It is a known fact that the SS zone owns the resources which is used to spoon feed all other 5 geopolitical zones in Nigeria. If the secessionist must include the SS, proper negotiations and agreements have to be reached first instead of just lumping the SS together with the SE in the secession plot. The people of the SS are humans too and should be respected and allowed to speak for themselves.

Finally, this thread is about an economic and political statement from Pastor Bakare, let's not turn this to another ipob thread.

Those are non-compass directional systems, which we obviously don't go by, as evident from our cardinal references usually used, e.g SouthWest (SW), South East (SE), North (N) and so on...

So if you are going to stick to a system with a standard, why then deviate from said standard when it doesn't suit your warped intentions?

Yes, in the U.S they may refer to areas using the coast as a reference, but as I said earlier, that is a non-compass directional system, which obviously we haven't mainly adopted, else we'd also be using terms like west/north/south/east of the niger more commonly.

However, you and I both know that when in Nigeria, using the cardinal system we've adopted and someone mentions the SW or the SE, we immediately know the area they are referring to. Sadly the same can be said for the SS, but again I ask what is SS in a compas cardianal system, which we have adopted?

Dude, you have no point here please, psss South South Doesn't that sound like the makings of an illiterate

The standards are set by the authorities involved, not Geography. The cardinal system has 4 ( 5 depending on the system you adopt) points but in the world today, people call the Arab area, the middle east (can you show me that in the cardinal system)? There are also places described as Far East but that would not be taught in any Geography class.

As for the bold, when you say SS, everyone knows which region you refer to. That's the reason why some people use it interchangeably with "Niger delta".

The government of Nigeria decides which part belongs where and not you.

Anyway, for the sake of politics, let's leave it at that, but pls when talking about igboland, it cludes anioma, and upland rivers (obigbo/oyigbo, egbema, ndoki, igwuocha)

Your emotions are obviously running on overdrive. We are not here to argue semantics or origins of the word south-south. The words in your so called dictionary or your so called 'google' were all created by humans. Similarly, south-south is a 'geopolitical' term, just the same way we have the north-central or the way we had the mid-west; it is a simple geopolitical coinage. That the existence of the word 'SS' doesn't suit your present political argument, that does not mean the people who use the word are stupid, so watch your mouth.

Furthermore, erasing the term 'south-south' and lumping it into the SE does not automatically erase the maladies of fuel scarcity, power failure etc. which you highlighted. So quit spewing words out of sour emotions.

Under the Nigerian geo-political arrangement, akwa-ibom falls under the SS geopolitical zone; this isn't an elemetary geography case where you just draw 4-compass points of north-east-west-south. We also have zones like north-central and formerly mid-west which don't really tally with the elementary geography compass points. Then again, talking about Igbo land, Anioma and the Igbo speaking areas of Rivers are obviously Igbo land, I doubt if anyone has ever disputed that. But when it comes to the present secession plot, are the non-SE Igbos willing to jump on the boat with the larger Igbo population?.. That is a question for another day.
