Fayose challenges Buhari to prosecute Yobe REC for allegedly taking N15m bribe

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to prosecute the Yobe State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Abu Zarma, for allegedly receiving N15 million as bribe to influence the Yobe State governorship election.

The governor said it was only when that is done that the president’s fight against corruption could enjoy the needed credibility.

“If nothing is done on a case as clear as that of the INEC REC, Nigerians can as well kiss President Buhari anti-corruption fight goodbye,” said the governor in a statement by his spokesman, Lere Olayinka.

Mr. Fayose said it was worrisome that despite the fact that details of the two bank accounts of the INEC REC, which showed that N15 million was lodged into his accounts few days to the April 11 election, was admitted as evidence by the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in the state, the REC has not been charged to court.

“It is on record that two officials of Diamond Bank Plc and Zenith Bank Plc, tendered exhibits confirming the payment of N15 million into the REC’s accounts by the Aide-de-Camp to Yobe State Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Zakari Deba.

“The ADC allegedly paid N8 million into the Diamond Bank account of the INEC REC and N7 million into his Zenith Bank accounts on April 8, 2015, three days before the governorship election.

“As at the time the N8 million was paid into the Diamond Bank account, only N28, 000 was in the account.

“Why then is the Yobe INEC REC not being tried yet? Why has he not been charged to court?

why witch hunting the south south electoral officials because you loss elections there. I can only see only the South South electoral officials being investigated and alleged of their involvement in bribery. What happened in the North? Are you directly saying in the north there was no electoral malpractices and also the North electoral officials did not take bribes to manipulate election results in favour of APC?
I think APC members and their Bubu are still pained about their loss.
APC government is government of media arrest without prosecution. Ask them how many they have sentenced since the Bubu's fight againt kworoption!

So is Punch now insinuating the propaganda party APC could have won those states? Please give me a break! APC will never find favour with the great people of the South-south.

What you're saying is not relevant.

Focus on the amounts found in their accounts.

Almost all the Inec and Adhoc officials that handled the last general elections in the SE and SS collected bribes to rig the elections. These people have to explain how they got such amount of money vis-a-vis their monthly pay.
Those in the north didn't need money cos they are the conspirators!

I love this selective activities of this senseless government. It ensures there will finally be revolution, and without revolution no "change" is assured. Let's keep edging towards the precipice of war. cool cool.
The change is getting close to being fulfilled afterall wink cheesy

Can you lead the revolution ?

I bet you are most likely non-existing during the nigerian civil war.

But you can still have a peep look at Syria and Libya to imagine what is likely to be your fate.

I don't care about APC or PDP.

Who will live a d who will be killed may not be known but certainly not the politicians and their families.

By the time the war starts, they will be far gone. Leaving the brainless ones to fight for them like some are killing each other in rivers over what? APC/PDP!

Politicians who will jump ship and dump either party tomorrow?!

I don't believe in violence and bloody revolution because the innocent souls are usually the worst for it.

All the "vultures" in nigeria are from all tribes and religions when it comes to stealing, they all have their passports intact and ready to fly out at the slightest opportunity.

Some of these people have dual citizenships.

So who and who will kill each other?

The brain-washed poor!

Right now, those who instigated war in libya and ran away are still the same people calling the shots.

Ojukwu didn't die during the civil war while hundreds of thousands of Igbos lost their lives.

He fled and came back to lead the defeated region.

Only teenagers talk about revolution the way you do.

They are considered proceeds of crime.

If a civil servant, you've got a lot of talking to do.
This is what you said because those involved were Delta, Rivers and Akwa Ibom INEC officials, states APC lost.

Read the link.

The REC himself alerted the bank and EFCC about unauthorised payments into his account.

APC could not just get over the nightmare that they lost those 3 major oil producing states so once again they have resorted to their cheap lies and propaganda as if they ever stood a chance of winning in any of the 3 states. Shamefully, the EFCC and DSS have become willing tools of blackmail in the hands of the evil party.

While it may be true dat APC cud not win in those states the INEC staffs hv no biz collecting such amount of money from politicians cos it my seem like it's a bribe for d elections. If indeed such money is trace to their accounts, why Ws it paid? That's d worrying issue I think. Explainations are needed here.

In fact, it is a very sad situation. The report also said some of the suspects made confessional statements but many of those that commented could not wait for Court process. All they could say is witch hunt, PDP, Ijaw and other mundane statements.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has found over N675.1m in the bank accounts of different Independent National Electoral Commission officials in Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Delta states.

According to the anti-graft agency, the money was received and shared by the officials during the last governorship elections.

Our correspondents gathered that the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the 2015 election in Rivers State, Mrs. Gesila Khan, and other officials of INEC are already in EFCC custody. Onyema OKonjo Khan was quizzed by the Department of State Services in July last year but was never charged.

However, SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that Khan and four others were arrested on Thursday, by the zonal office of the EFCC in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
The residences of all the suspects were subsequently searched and incriminating documents were said to have been recovered by the commission.

According to impeccable sources at the EFCC, Khan, who is now the REC in Cross River State, allegedly received N185.8m ahead of the March 28 and April 11, 2015 election.

A source at the EFCC, who did not want his name in print, said Khan had made confessional statements and was cooperating with the commission.

He alleged that Khan received money through a special bank account and the commission had received overwhelming evidence.

He said, “Khan was the REC in Rivers State in 2015 election before she was transferred to Cross River early this year. She was said to have received N185.8m. She has made confessional statements.”

The anti-graft agency also arrested one Edem Okon Essanga, who is a retired INEC official. Essanga was arrested alongside his alleged accomplice, Immaculata Asuquo, who is the Head, Voter Education, INEC, Akwa Ibom State.

Essanga was alleged to have received over N240m which he shared among INEC ad hoc workers during the last election.

“Essanga received N241.1m during the general election. He admitted receiving the money and confirmed sharing it with different ad hoc workers during the election. His accomplice Asuquo has also been arrested,” the source added.

The source also disclosed that the EFCC had arrested one Fidelia Omoile who was the INEC electoral officer in Isoko-South Local Government Area, Delta State.

Apart from tracing over N112m to her, the commission also recovered some sensitive electoral materials during a search of her apartments in Edo and Delta states.

“She received N112.4m during the 2015 general election. A search warrant was executed at her residences in Asaba and Benin. Sensitive materials used in the 2015 elections were recovered, including evidence of the suspicious bank transaction and land documents that will assist us in our investigations,” Onyema Okonjo the source said.

The commission also arrested one Oluchi Obi Brown who was the INEC administrative secretary in Delta State. She allegedly received over N111m.
